70 kms to go.......out of gas

Recommended Posts

-20 degrees outside, 1 am driving home to Winnipeg. I am slowly watching the gas gauge go down and watching the distance to empty. I figured I had 20 excess km to make it home. There was only one gas station on the way, and I don't like their never used premium gas pump. I have gotten the gas gauge down to empty before with the computer saying (not verbally) 30 kms to empty and did not have a problem.

This time it said 70 kms to empty and the gauge was showing about 1/10 of a tank of gas. Stutter..............stutter, ok for 30 seconds...........out of gas.

Call Subaru roadside assistance, the guy took 14 mins to get all of his info, I was getting cold.

Closest town is 27 mins away. 20 mins later tow truck driver called, said he was close and would be by soon. 30 mins later tow truck driver comes by, opens up gas compartment, pulls out empty jerry can! Idiot! Says he will run back to town and get gas.

1 hr and 20 mins later he comes back, I can't see him because the windows are like solid ice. Puts $10 of regular gas in the car and the car works fine.

Only upside is I am suppose to pay for the gas, NO CHANCE!!!!!

That is what is soo odd to me.

I have had it low too, filled it up and found there to be still a couple of litres left in the tank. It gave me confidence in the gauge, seemd fairly accurate, if anything it seemed like I could likely go 20 kms or so farther then what it said. Not 70 km less.

My wife hates me now. Maybe it is because of the frost-bite on her fingers and toes!

So you sent her go get gas while you stayed behind to protect the car, then rememberd you had roadside assistance. I'm sure you picked her up as soon as you got under way. No reason to hate you.

I'm going to find out later today. My gas light has been on all day and I've been driving back and forth quite a bit. It has said 40 miles til empty for a bit, then went down to 30. The ring around the fuel gauge isn't blinking yet so I can't be in too much trouble!

Fortunately there's lots of gas around, I just don't have time to stop until this evening.

That gauge isn't completely accurate, it should be a no brainer to fill up when you are low. I still don't get why some people wait and try to stretch it. While it may be nice to know what the limits are, unless its an emergency, why bother?

That's how I always do it, err well at least usually. I was busy this week and the gas gauge kinda snuck up on me.

I don't like running under 1/4 tank personally.

isn't there supposed to be a reserve tank or something?

the digital readout on my c4 corvette used to switch to "LO" when you were getting into danger territory.....is that what the "- - -" is supposed to represent? any difference in noise from the engine compartment when you are dangerously close? (on some vehicles the engine begins to howl, i suppose from more air than fuel in the mix ratio)

The reason for the error is explained by the following, quoted from the owner's manual:

The driving range indicates the distance that can be

driven taking into account the amount of fuel remaining

in the tank and the average rate of fuel consumption.

This average rate of fuel consumption is based on the trip meters as quoted from the owner's manual:

This indication shows the average rate of fuel consumption

since the trip meter was last reset.

Since it is based on the trip meter, the average fuel consumption over the timeframe of the trip meter could be much lower than your current fuel consumption due to many factors like city vs. highway, weather, etc.

This is why this is not an accurate calculation and can be off.

Hope this helps!
