Q re the tube/cylinder around the stock speakers

You know the one I'm talking about. The one around the circumfrence of the speaker. What the hell is it for? Direction? Keeping water off the speaker?Have any of you with upgraded speakers tried to reinstall it (or fabricate a new one)? Have any of you noticed a difference in sound direction, vibration, anything without it?

If it's what I think you're talking about, it would help to seal the speaker to the door panel forcing all sound pressure waves into the car's interior. Technically, it should improve sound quality and reduce door resonation

Around the entire circumference or the extended part that is oriented top/inside? I'm thinking the latter is a shield for water. I'm going to make new spacers this weekend and plan to replicate those with some flexible plastic. The word on the street is my Polk's are particularly sensitive to water damage.
