hail, how big do they have to be?

Recommended Posts

my garage doors are being installed and my car is sitting outside. we in NJ just had a nice wintry mix weather, hail and whatnot. the hail "balls" themselves were not too big, but i started to wonder, detailing/clean freak that i am :) if my car would be alrite. i'm assuming the hails were not big enough to damage the paint in any way, but whats your experience with the legacy in this sort of weather?

No dents from hail, but you better believe I'd be heading for an underpass if it ever started hailing and I was out on the roads. With as thin as our sheetmetal is (it's been a problem with Subarus since forever) I wouldn't trust hail not to dent it. Expect an insurance claim if you are caught in any type of serious hail storm.

I got myself into a hail storm once in Atlanta, and my car got pretty much destroyed... Actually not, I am exagerating, but a looot of dents and pretty big balls, 3-4" diameter... Totally crazy!!!!

Can't live in the south where that is pretty much common down there... Ouch!!!

I was in Dallas in 96 when we got hit by a huge hail storm. There was massive damage to every car that was outside. You can still spot the cars that were affected. The surface of the car looks like the surface of a golf ball. Hail will dent the crap out of your car even if it is just parked. This is why some of the more expensive car covers are worth it. Some of them are padded and will help prevent damage from hail when you aren't expecting a storm and you have to park your car outside for a long period of time. If you do see a hail storm coming then it is a good idea to get the car under a tree or somewhere else that it will be protected. You'll see people throwing quilts over their cars during hail storms sometimes when they get big enough. It is definitely something to worry about if you live in that kind of area.
