melayout
If you run the car hard or it's modded, avoid Mobil 1 30 weights. Oil is not magic. Royal Purple or Red Line isn't the best, so check the used oil analysis reports on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com and decide. Do oil analysis at least once to make sure everything's fine. melayout
why avoid 30 weights? I run M1 Extended performance 5w30 and I am stage II protuned and it is great Mobil 1 30 weights are thinner than most and turbos tend to beat them into 20 weights. That may not be the case with you but many Subie owners, on NASIOC and BITOG, have commented that they go thru quarts with M1. That's why you should do an oil analysis even if you're not consuming significant amounts of oil to see whether it's holding up or not, because if you wait till it starts consuming, the damage may have already been done. deneb
IMO, you're wasting $ changing synth oil every 3k. Regular dino would probably be fine at 3k intervals. If you spend time researching the bobistheoilguy forums, you'll find that dino oils do quite well in most situations, and have proven to be more durable than I thought. I'm using a Havoline synth/dino blend for 5k intervals, will do a UOA to see how it's holding up. My guess is that it's holding up fine.
wukindada
using 5w30 I was using about 3/4 of a quart every 5k...after swithching over to 10w30 I use less than a 1/4 of a quart every 5k:) Toyota 6EATS .........SUCK!!!!!!

melayout
You can try the Mobil 1 5W-40 Truck & SUV Formula or try a different brand like Pennzoil 10W-30 or 10W-40 ? I keed I keeed
derffred
so how will i know if i'm burning oil or not, beside checking the dipstick... excessive blue smoke from exhaust? will it run fucked up, or smell bad...
melayout
If it's from the rings: - Check all spark plugs, the problematic cylinder would have a fouled plug - Compression/Leakdown test - Remove exhaust manifold and check the exhaust ports and uppipe(CAT too) for burned oil residue If it's from the turbo: - Check the intercooler for oil, could be leaking from the turbo cartridge seal - Check the downpipe for burned oil residue, could be leaking from the turbo cartridge seal If it's from the PCV valve: - Check the intercooler for oil, could be leaking from the turbo cartridge seal I keed I keeed
derffred
what are the typical driveability problems if i have a leaking seal
melayout
IIRC NONE, I experienced the busted turbo cartridge and shattered ringlands/rings and it wasn't rootcaused till after an oil consumption test was done by the dealer. The only indication was the excessive oil consumption, which according to Subaru is around 1quart / 1000 miles. I thought any consumption less than that was due to my driving so I waited till it was so bad to take to the dealer. In hindsight, I would've brought up the issue much earlier and pressed the dealer todo a compression/leakdown test and inspect the intercooler. This would've rootcaused the issue 15-20K miles earlier. I keed I keeed
kimcheeal
changed to amsoil 5-30. thisis supposed to be better than mobile 1 (may not be as thin) car runs smooth and silky, and feels like it has a taaaaaaad more power (stock motor) especially at high revs. it s only been 1200 miles since change( at 6000 mi) so cant tell if using oil. castor
Just changed to Amsoil 5/30 at 6000 kms. HUGE difference in -25C weather....Huge. Starts are significantly easier. Much smoother, feels that way anyway. Reference the oil consumption issue....my 05 LGT wagon used approx 0.7 litre over the 6000 km interval. I've never had a car use this much oil before, but according to a mech at the dealership, he said this was well within acceptable limits for the turbo engine. deneb
hm, i'm using Mobil 1 synth 0-40.. is that bad? i only use it cuz i get it for free at work.. i checked my oil last week, it was pretty low.. now i'm thinking if i should go back or not... all opinions are greatly appreciated How much oil did you use? If you're getting M1 0-40 for free, I'd use that. It's a good synth oil, and meets the ACEA A3 spec (European spec), it's plenty good enough for our Subies. I won't use it simply because it goes for 6 bucks a quart around here, IMO it's just not worth the $, when I can spend a lot less than half that and still get oil that meets spec and will keep my engine healthy for many 100's of thousands of miles.
