Legacy05
Just a quick question to those that did the mod so you can have your fogs on with your parking lights. What guage wire did you use???
Guest *Jedimaster*
I think mine was 12 gauge.

mccorry
I don't remember, specifically, but it isn't carrying alot of current. Just supplying a 12V signal to the coil. 10 or 12 gauge should be just fine.
Deer Killer
It's just relay power, 18 gauge should be ok. 12 gauge = huuuuge.

mccorry
Ah... I meant small. I don't know my wire sizes that well.....
Bicster
I ran 10-gauge wire to power my 240-volt, 30-amp air compressor
executor485
12 guage is about what you need to run speakers with high wattage (not to the amp though). 18 guage should be plenty. If I pass you on the right, I'm flipping you off.
Legacy05
Last question, should it be a solid wire or stranded wire? Will any 18 gauge wire work? Like 18 gauge speaker wire?
Bicster
I would not use speaker wire. Electrically it is fine, but get something that has colors that make sense, like red+black or yellow+black. (Disclaimer: I haven't seen this mod, so I don't know what connections are actually involved. Maybe other colors make more sense.) Stranded wire is much easier to work with. It's more flexible and easier to solder.
Legacy05
Thanks .. just spoke to someone and they mentioned that I should match the wire if possible size wise, so it almost looks like 14 gauge wire.
GTsleeper
^^ thats really ur best bet-- using the same wire as what ur connecting to
mwiener2
don't use solid copper in cars. they don't flex much and over time, vibrations can casue them to break My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
John M
The wiring inside the car is not 14 gauge. It's 16 at the biggest; probably closer to 18 to save weight and money. The fog mod circuit modificaiton carries about half an amp -- just enough to trigger the relay. That's barely any current at all so there's no reason to go with a giant wire. Don't over-think these things! See mod, like mod, do mod!
Claw
Don't mean to threadjack, but is it possible to have your fogs do double duty as DRL's and convert the headlights to them funky HID's?
Bicster
I think in some places it's illegal to run fogs when there's no fog...? Not sure. I saw some posts on the forum where people got ticketed for driving with their fogs on. Add HID's and run the risk of two tickets.
TRS
You can mod the fogs to turn on independantly of the parking lights and headlights (and even stay on with the highs if you want). So yes you will be able to have just the fogs on as your DRLs without any other lights on. Another option is to use this module to convert your front turn signals into DRLs. Ah, ok.. just wondering, as Audi's around here use their fogs as DRL's, same with Murano's...
schwinn
Yeah, but if you use a thicker wire, the lights will be brighter, the bulbs will last longer, and the car will be teh fast3st yo! </sarcasm>
