Lazy Power Steering

Lowerit

Recommended Posts

This is my first post. I have been selling Subaru's for the last 3 years and finally sold one to my father. In anycase We do quite a bit of autocrossing and one thing I noticed ont he LEgacy GT is that it's very easy to beat the powersteering....

is there a fix for this?

It uses the same rack as an STI?? Then WTF is with the steering. I had an 05 GT at an autocross and the steering went dead when you threw it into sea of cones... I have also autocrossed a friends STi on numerous occasions with a bone stock alignment and not been able to beat the steering. is the pulley ont he Sti smaller?

^ that's a known problem and it's due to many things.. (the dead zone is large).

The alignment of the caster and camber is a lot on the GT (stock), more so than any other previous Subaru. I guess it's Subaru way of making the car fool-proof and provide that slow luxury ride..

if you increase the camber and caster on this car (after mods like mine), it will make it worse.. only thing you can do is to get better tires and lessen some of the camber if possible.

Xenonk, what alignment settings would you recommend to get a tighter steering feel? The problem I have is that the steering feels too light as if I'm driving on ice (feels like there is not enough contact between the front tires and the road). Also, the steering wheel seems to have some freeplay zone, although it's pretty minimal. The tire pressure is within the specs (33 up front and 30 in the back). Thanks.

The dealer said that the steering system on the car works fine. So, I suspect that it's the alighment issue. my left front caster is 6.2 and the right front caster 5.8.

run less camber up front to -1.0, that should help a little.. run some toe out that is near 1/16" out.. that should help for the turn-in. You can also increase the toe out in the rear to 1/32".

You can run higher pressures such as 38 front/36 rear.

Hey Xenonk, which way do you turn this camber adjust bolt to move camber towards -1? I get confused easily... :) Thanks

Edit: I guess I just need to know is "increase" moving top of tire away from the center of the car and "decrease" camber means move tops of tires towards center?

Thanks Xenonk. Is there a problem that the left front caster is different from the left right caster (6.2 v. 5.8)?

My current other settings are:

Front toe

Left: 0.06 Right: 0.03

Total toe: 0.09

Rear toe:

left: 0.00 right: -0.01

Total toe: -0.02

Front Camber

left: 0.0 right: -0.2

Rear Camber

left: -0.3 right: -0.7
