KZJonny
So, in theory I am going to go take a look at a 3.0R sedan a coupe hours away from where I am at. The car itself is pretty much a write-off, and honestly not really worth saving. BUT the driveline is fine, apparently, I want to rob that, and all the associated parts from the shell. Owner says is it undriveable because of a power steering leak, but is unsure of where the leak is coming from. I'm willing to replace parts on site to get the car back to my place for dissasembly, but it seems like the easier path is just to throw a belt on that deletes the the PS Pulley, and get it back without assist. I'm under the impression the pump will burn itself up if I drive it far at all without ATF in it to cool + lubricate it, and it is a part I would want to keep. SO. I wonder if anyone with a 3.0R and a peice of string would be willing to get a rough idea of the required belt length to run the serpentine w/o the PS pump I'd buy a belt or two in the closest sizes and bring them with me, but I don't think there is currently a 3.0R in the local scrap yard for me to even go and measure off of at the moment. Open to other suggestions as well, but this seemed the the simplest way to drive a car with a bad leak in the PS system. (Maybe it is slow enough I can just stop along the way and keep topping it up, but I want to plan for the worst case. Cheers. Infosecdad
My son has an '09 with a 3.0R, I'll see if I can meet up with him in the next few days to measure for you.
KZJonny
Thanks dude. Might be handy information in general, even if my use for it is rather specific. I’ll post up with which belt actually fits if it comes to that.
KZJonny
Finally heard back from the seller. He's been out of town, so I was beginning to wonder if the ad was a dead end. One other person interested, so we'll see. I think for asking price, I'll just offer to take it without any hassle, and hope that the other person isn't also just after the drivetrain. Looking for an (Ontario) cleanish wagon shell now. C'mon EJ253 head gaskets... fail someone now so I can have a cheap body to drop this H6 in. lol!
Infosecdad
Sorry, it took a bit, the closest I could get with a string on the pulleys was approximately 40" That's bypassing the power steering pump, but still trying to use that tensioner. I'm not convinced it'll work, that's not a great route without the PS pump pulley in the path. Depending on the rate of leak, I would be tempted to bring a couple qts of ATF and just stop frequently. KZJonny
Big thanks dude. Without an engine in front of me, I was hard to tell from the diagrams if it could work, but i seemed like the best path forward. I’m at least second in line to see the car, so I’m not holding my breath. Also, an STi 6MT just came up down the road from me for a very reasonable $1500 CAD, which might be a smarter way to waste money than starting a new project.
