2021 Legacy XT Perrin Turbo Inlet install

I wanted to share some install info I received from Perrin, in case anyone plans on installing the Perrin Turbo Inlet on their '21 LegXT. The manufacturer's instructions are 29 steps deep. See attached.

Right around step 20 there's a disclaimer that states "NOTE: If this is being installed on a manual transmission vehicle or 2020-22 Legacy XT, Outback XT, or Ascent, continue on with step 20 until the end of the instructions. If this is being installed on a CVT/SPT transmission vehicle, or 2023+ Legacy XT, Outback XT, or Ascent then skip to step 29."

The steps after step 19 ask about solenoids and brake booster hoses and there's some tube cutting needed in order to install a couple (delicate) T-connectors. Needless to say, I really really wanted to make sure that I had the right hoses before cutting since the instruction's pictures were for the '22+ WRX,  and my '21 Legacy engine layout looked...not quite the same. 

I don't know about you but the way the "Note" was written was a little confusing, since my 2021 Legacy XT...is a CVT. It wasn't clear if I needed to cut hoses or not, so I asked Perrin and was told that since my vehicle is a CVT that I should to skip steps 20-28. This was a huge relief. That said, the order of the statements in which  the disclaimer was written, was again, confusing. Anyway, I plan to install tomorrow but wanted to post this in case anyone else plans to bolt-on a Perrin inlet. If you're rolling a CVT skip the steps, if your 21 LegXT is a CVT (are some not?) then skip the steps...pretty much skip the steps unless you're in a WRX with a CVT.

Yes to the evap fitting (aluminum) on the actual inlet. They also supplied vac hose for the T-fittings, but evidently they're not needed for a CVT. Perrin said to skip everything topside the engine bay at the EVAP solenoid and brake booster. I guess we're going to find out if they had that right.

Your car doesn’t have those connections as it is a CVT. Follow the instructions and skip those steps. Hope that helps and when we can help further, please just let us know! Thanks for choosing PERRIN and ALTA! Myles T.

Cool. A friend of mine said that there is a hissing sound at the hole plug where the flange is installed not covering it completely or sealing it? and leaves a small gap between. You can hear it while under hard acceleration. Don't know if you have experience  that problem yet?

So after checking, double checking and triple checking with Perrin they said that they essentially gave me bad info... it turns out that I will need to be splicing hoses, etc., up top.

I'll let you know how it goes SuperDuper. You can disregard pretty much everything on this thread. 😑

I suspect Perrin will be redrafting the instructions to mitigate further and future confusion on this component's install. Stay tuned.

Yep. Definitely had to cut and splice hosing. From the experience I'd have invested in a smaller diameter t-fitting to fit the evap hose splice. The 1/2" adapter was a HUGE pain to get in place. The vac line to the booster hose was simple to install, and the lower engine component install was also pretty straightforward. 

Fyi, the picture for the evap splice showed varying colored hoses where mine were actually ALL BLUE. I just spliced in to the hose that attached to the back of the solenoid like the picture showed. 

So far I'm not pulling any codes. Perrin called to followup on my install too. Great customer/tech service.

Not that I'm picking up in the cabin or with the windows down. My turbo lag is reduced and throttle response seems more deliberate. 

Did your friend remember to pull the o-ring off the OEM nipple and install on the flange plug in step 12? I could see a missing or torn seal ring causing some hissing.
