xt2005bonbon
First pic shows new vs old starter brushes. Notice how short the old ones were. No wonder no start! Edited July 5, 2023 by xt2005bonbon

blackobxt
Where did you find brushes? I tried and failed and at the time couldn’t afford a starter (LOT of money locked in between buying a house while selling a house) so I modified the brushes to get more like out of them. That lasted about three years

silverton
Damn a starter does not cost that much . Right? Curious how much the brushes were and how many hours of labor this takes.

xt2005bonbon
I need to update the OP!! To quickly answers the questions above: brushes cost 20$ on ebay shipped!! Took like 1-1.5hr from removal of starter to reinstall, not rushing it. It's pretty quick really and not hard at all. Maybe it'll take more time if it is your first time touching it. blackobxt
Damn a starter does not cost that much . I’ve been there before too brother. Modified the brushes and got 2 extra years out of the starter. Did what I had to do when money was tight.
xt2005bonbon
The fix is way cheaper than a reman starter. So that's why I went that route. It's been a while now and both starters (did the job on two cars) are running great. They spin quite fast now and sound new.
relative4
What was the symptom this fixed? Was the starter not working, or was it making that nasty sound for half a second after you release it?
xt2005bonbon
The starter simply stopped working because the brushes were completely worn out. When worn out, they make a poor contact with the brushed motor. The latter then just does not spin. I had to hit the starter with a bar at the right place to get it to work until this no longer worked. Pay attention to the first picture of my 2nd post. I compare the old brushes with the new ones. See how short the original brushes are compared to the new ones!
xt2005bonbon
I still need to add some texts to the OPs . At least, I can provide an update that both starters are still working just fine since the fix. Edited January 6, 2023 by xt2005bonbon

xt2005bonbon
I'd say barely a 3. It is really not difficult. And as I previously said, I would think 1:30 to 2hr job. Not too bad.
