pinehurst2
Hello, I have a 2009 legacy GT (no turbo) and recently the A/C will sometimes start blowing hot air. I found that if I press the A/C button to turn it off, then hit the A/C button again, it will blow cold air for a while. This doesn't appear to work if I turn the power to the heating/cooling off, only if I use the A/C button. Any idea what this could be? Not sure if it makes a difference but for most/all of this summer the A/C barely blows cold air when idle but gets cold once I give it some gas. Thank you, Brian
Pleides
Have you noticed that all four face-pointed climate vents blow warm air, or just the ones by your face? All three blend door actuators on my car are bad with 16 years on them. I sometimes get warm air on my face from the center one that tends to be cured for a minute if I drastically drop the temperature or turn it off for several minutes and turn it on again. You could also need an A/C recharge.
GEE-OTTO
Great point^ and I'll add it could be a failing AC Relay. MY 08 GT would do this, last year, checked the relay with a multi meter and it was junk. plugged in a new one and problem solved. The blend door issue is a bit more involved to fix, getting to and greasing the mechanism, but I too need to do that at some point.
Max Capacity
Yep, the AC relay is $7.00 part and is in the under hood fuse box. I replaced it years ago when my wagon would blow cold for 30 minutes or so then go hot. I'd shut off the AC for a few minutes, then turn it on again, it was fine. A little while later, I had the system serviced by a Pro. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. pinehurst2
Didn’t think to check. I’ll check all vents the next time it blows hot air. Thank you

Pleides
Recharge the A/C (you can get a small kit for it at NAPA or Autozone) and see what happens first. The relay may help but there’s no point in replacing that before making sure you actually have refrigerant in the system.
