BridNasty's 09 RRM Spec-B

Hello and welcome to the build thread for my 2009 Subaru Legacy Spec-B! I bought it in March 2020 from another member that whose username I can't remember. It had about 121,000 miles on it and while it has a decent amount of corrosion from a P.O. in NY, it seemed pretty decent.

A few months into driving, the uppipe rusted through at the flex joint so I took it to All Aspects Motorsports. While they had it, they figured out it had an OTS tune for a catted downpipe when the current one is decatted. (causing it to overboost) I had them do a protune and while they were putting it through its paces, they found a lean condition at WOT (solved by an upgraded fuel pump) and an ignition issue caused by these coils.

Right as everything seemed ready to make a successful pull, they noticed coolant was being pushed past the radiator cap. A new cap should solve that, right? WRONG. They diagnosed it as the beginning of a leaking headgasket and gave me 3 options:

  • Have the headgasket replaced
  • Build the motor
  • Take the car as is with a limp tune as a safety precaution

As this decision was laid out for me, The Air Force hit me with a last minute deployment. In my mind, this meant I would have plenty of money and time for them to build the engine. I gave them a goal of 350 WHP and they laid out a ~$12,000 invoice. I said YOLO and gave them the green light.

After 5 months of deployment and too much money to admit, I was home. When they pulled the engine, the NY rust presented some problems along the lines of seized motor mounts, studs, and there were other issues that added to the bill. I picked it up the first day I got back and was instructed on all the proper break-in procedures (short <25 mile trips, change oil at 500 miles, tune at 800 miles).

About 100 miles in, one of the small coolant hoses next to the driver's side TGV delete decided to rip as i was letting the car warm up.

I caught it quick and since I didn't want to deal with it, I had it towed down to All Aspects and they fixed it free of charge.

I got her back pretty quick and have been putting on miles as fast as responsibly possible. Next up is to put in the JDM aftermarket stereo kit and get it tuned! :spin:

First from one service member to another, thank you for your service. Hope things are getting better out there for you guys than when I served.

Awesome progress on your ride. Most of the people on the forum are the 2nd or 3rd owners of these cars, but there are a few like me that are still the first owner. Glad to see these still on the road. Enjoy!

Update time!

The car has completed the break-in miles and has been tuned!! The car makes (drumroll please):

340 AWHP

20210319_094213.jpg.aa49495dbd782fe34864bdbab6573fd8.jpg

They said it made a pull of 349HP but the MAF was maxed out. I had already said that they could dial it back a bit for reliability's sake, so they set it at a solid 340HP. In order to hit 350, an airflow sensor would have to be added (I forgot the name.) I'm pretty sure it's part of the E85 upgrade so when I go that route, we'll turn it up more. I'll probably end up upgrading the exhaust to get rid of the 2.5in midpipe in the process. To celebrate the new tune, I had a buddy in the business apply a ceramic coating to that Ruby red pearl. Look at her shine!

Next up is the new head unit and some bass in the back. Stay tuned!

that's a nice torque line. lots of area under the curve. Third gear pretty much keeps you on boost and in the "give me a ticket" range :)
That and the wastegate screaming, "He's over here!" has got me worried it's only a matter of time. [emoji23] I'm trying to be good.

Been a while since my last update. I'm terrible at taking any pictures while I'm working on anything and I only seem to think about updating this when I'm deployed. :spin: I miss my car. She just had her 6k mile oil change not too long ago, going strong minus getting the AC compressor blowing and needing a full system replacement taken care of courtesy of All Aspects Motorsports.

I replaced the stock stereo with the JDM double DIN and a Kenwood stereo/ cubby hole combo. I never really got the hype of the touch screen double DINs and didn't wanna have to pay an arm and a leg for a good Android Auto setup. Here's a before picture:

Here's the kit all compiled:

Here's me stuck in the car during a downpour trying to figure out the wiring to everything

In addition, I added a Bayson R V style front lip. It's bare plastic now but I think I'm gonna get it color matched to the car along with the fog light housings and that black strip behind the license plate. I've got some spats I might put on as well, we'll see. Here's how she looks right now

As soon as I get back, I'll have a set of Fortune Auto 500 v7 coilovers with Swift springs to put on! I'm not sure whether I'll need adjustable arms or anything to support the fitment but we'll see as we get there. The current wheels/tires aren't anything crazy. Later down the road, I'm eyeing some 18x8.5 +47 Work Emotion Kiwami and some 235/40/18 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. Baby steps...

GOOOOOOD Afternoon LegacyGT,

Since coming home from deployment, I've had to deal with a few hiccups. The first issue was the rear brake lines rusting out along the usual body mounts. This was solved with NiCo lines from the rear seats to the wheels. It was a learning experience for sure...20220805_161715.thumb.jpg.9874ed57c75f30ffe211db4b0e9ac905.jpg20220805_161529.thumb.jpg.b5dee6effd4746678638819d2c320262.jpgVideoCapture_20220810-132802.thumb.jpg.e25da2c48f337261f0d53f89b84889d5.jpg

Next was replacing the crusty ebay fog lights for the OEM setup. I also cleared the headlights.

20220928_125326.thumb.jpg.e5575f7dbbfa6e0274865363d53fe7ae.jpg

Finally, I got the Fortune Auto 500 coilovers installed at All Aspects Motorsports. I'm debating going lower but we'll see how it goes. I'll probably my hands on some Kiwamis before I do anything else. Enjoy the beauty of a freshly waxed car taken down on of Hampton Roads few dirt roads.
