Engine Swap Questions

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have scoured many a forum and many a google search has been had. I have seen many posts here about swapping "this" engine for "that" engine but I have learned very little. I apologize I am not very smart.

So my questions are...

I have an 05 LGT limited 5MT.

The kid that owned the car before me did all kinds of unknow things to this car I am sure. Long story short, I am getting a missfire code. My mechanic thinks it's the heads. Fast forward a few weeks and I purchased a full engine as this one had 180K+ on it. I purchased a JDM "2005-2005 Subaru Impreza wrx EJ255 2.5L Turbo Engine SINGLE AVCS Forester EJ255".

I assume I need to take the spark/fuel/air system off the current motor and move it to the "new" motor ? If I do this, can I keep the current ECU ? I have read many a post about having to accommodate for the AVCS system, but I currently (think) I have a single...and I am putting a single in...is that straight forward enough ?

I am going to keep the and maybe rebuild the current hardware, maybe add some power. Who do you trust to rebuild the heads/engine ?

I am sure I will have more stupid questions I am sure...thank you for your time.

Everything about that engine tells me it belongs in your car. More of a replacement and less of a swap if that makes sense. If your ecu is a stock ecu it should be happy.

But since this is a "jdm" engine (or marketed as one) I'd find out more about it to make sure. What heads? It is truly single avcs, right? It's for sure not actually a 2.0, right? What does it's current fuel system look like? How complete is the new engine? Did it come with a turbo (which one if it did?)

Assuming there's no huge incompatibilities, you might get away with installing it but should definitely have it custom tuned. Dyno or e-tuned. That would be the best way to make sure everything is happy given that the p.o. kid mucked about with stuff. Fresh start if you will.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond.

I basically found one on ebay and had it shipped. I don't have the motor in hand yet.

The posting stated it was an EJ255 2.5l. The exact reason I purchased it. I will have to determine the rest of that information once I get it.

There is a tuner about 2 hours from me, I will be sure to take it in.

EDIT: Also since the motor is coming out, I am assuming it's time to put in a new clutch...any suggestions for a daily driver ?

Exedy makes some stock equivalent, you should be able to find it on most import parts sites.

Also consider switching to single mass flywheel and hex flywheel bolts if you haven't already. You can find that info in the transmissions technical forums.

This is what I know from some odd years of playing with Subarus.

EJ255 is a North American engine, as far as I know, they weren't in Japan (JDM).

According to the transmission code, that came out of a 2004 Forester XT

The only 2.5L Turbo in a Forester that I know of is the STi w/ 6sp in 2004.

With that being an auto, I think it's a 2.0L.

It might be that the auction is titled EJ255 as people will look for replacements for EJ255 and some will drop in the EJ20 from Japan instead.

I think I found the auction on eBay.

How come you paid for an automatic tranny with it?

If they haven't shipped yet, I would ask them to double check that it's actually a EJ255.

If it's JDM, it's most likely EJ20.

If it's USDM, then it's a EJ255 (actually an EJ257 like your '05 LGT)

seanyb505:

I am looking at replacing the flywheel and bolts for sure. i have seen the Exedy's around.

Infosecdad:

Thanks for the info. I have asked him the question, we will see what he comes back with. as for the tranny, I figured I would sell it or something, it was a package deal so I just bought it that way.

If this is a 2.0L and I end up with it...how boned am I ?

Edit: from the Ebay seller "This is 2.5L thats why more expensive cylinder block has ej25 marking not ej20"

  • 1 month later...

Just an update here. The swap went well, no issues that I know of. Turbo rebuilt by JPM, what a wealth of Subaru info he is. If you guys haven't talked to him, you are missing out.

I am at 200 miles. 300 till clutch is fully broken in. I will know more then :)
