Old Legacy - New Noise

Recommended Posts

2005 Legacy N/A with a little over 200K mils.

In the last week, I've noticed a humming sound from around the dash immediately after I start the car. It goes away in a few seconds. I don't know if it's a relay or something.

Typically, I drive to work, leave it parked all day and when I leave at night, the same hum occurs at start up for a few seconds.

Any ideas?

Does it sound like a drip coffee pot percolating? If so then it is the A/C actuators.

Only other common dash related noise is the locating clips for the dash against the firewall but those rattle and would be all the time.

It's a low hum/buzz that lasts about five seconds every time I start the car. It sounds like it's coming from behind the dash, between the instrument cluster and the head unit.

could be the fuel system priming. the fuel pressure regulator is on the driver side shock tower and I noticed humming when I upgraded to an STI FPR with less insulation from the chassis. It sounds like it is coming from the dash. Edited by chato

So the buzzing happens after you start not, not before like in this video?

Yes, the buzzing happens after the engine starts. My car wouldn't start this morning and it just needed a new starter. Would the starter switch buzz?

Alright then. How about the HVAC blend door actuator? Since the weather turned colder, I noticed that I'm not getting significant heat in the cabin. This past weekend, I had a new radiator installed and asked the shop to look at the thermostat. The tech said I needed a new blend door actuator. I found a great Youtube video on changing the actuator out, and another with the noise a bad one makes. The noise in my dash sure sounds like it. The part is cheap. I hope to replace it myself as I'm getting quotes of $600 and more.
