EJ255 interchange

Recommended Posts

Hi there, sorry if it has been discussed but after searching ... can't find a definitive answer.

Long story-short, my '08 OBXT ej255 started knocking.

I'd like the simplest/cheapest route to a used replacement engine (I know it's not ideal, but for now, that's what I'd like to consider).

1) What are the key differences in all the ej255 iterations that would prevent me from using them ? Or make it more difficult.

For instance, I know I have a secondary air pump and before '08 on legacy GT and OBXT, I think they don't have ... That, I could live with if it's only that (I'll just try to figure how to erase the code ... or is there more to that if I reuse the same OBXT '08 ECU?).

Are '05+ WRX's the same ?

Are '04+ FXT the same ?

2) I'm searching the scrap yard inventories and they are usually pretty good in giving interchange options. For example, they do not list the same engine for a '07 WRX as a LGT ... Why ? Plastic intake ? Something else ?

Also, price seem to sky rocket after '08 on either FXT, WRX, GT engines. So I'm trying to see if like a '05 LGT would fit easily or not ?

I'm basically looking for answers like :

"WRX '05-'06 - metal intake and no air pump, aside that pretty pnp" or

"WRX '05-'06 - works but need to change the intake since since fitment issues (i.e. intercooler from OBXT won't fix, etc...)"

"05-06 LGT won't work since differents cylinder head and compression ratios + no air pump = needs tuning or ECU = complicated for OBXT '08+ due to immobilizer"

I know best options is '08+ LGT or OBXT ... but they're 3k+ !!

I know second best option is having the one I have rebuilt since it'll be gone through and gaskets would be done at the same time ... but probably cost more and there will be more downtime (also there's always surprises).

A low mileage, well kept ej255 could be ok 😊

Anyhow,

Thanks for any help on the subject 😊

EJ257's are way easier to navigate 😉
