Clicking Noise on cold start

Hi guys. Picked up my second Legacy around a month ago. 06 spec B that I've been tidying up.

I've got some clicking noises that I initially diagnosed as being CV related. I've changed both front axles but the noises persist.

There are two distinctly different sounds, not sure if they are related.

 

First one is a intermittent knock. It seems to do it at random when driving, not necessarily when I hit a bump but sometimes it does. Occasionally it will make a pop sound. Most easily heard when I drive slow as it seems to knock more frequently.

It seems to go away for a short period after I've jack the car up.

 

The second, and most worrying is a fast consistant clicking coming from the front left on cold start. I dont have to be moving when it happens and it gets faster with acceleration. It only happens in reverse gear but goes away after a few seconds. Again, it only seems to happen when its cold. Outside temp <5 degree celsius.
