Darbykidd
I have a VW Vanagon with an EJ22 in it. It is OBD1 and I thought it is from a 90-94 Legacy. Recently I got the MLI code 13 for a Camshaft angle position sensor. Looking at my Chilton manual covering 1985-1996 years and models of Subaru, it says that for Legacy models I would need to remove the timing belt, sprocket etc. to get to the sensor. However, for the Impreza, it says just remove the bolt holding it on and it comes right off....this is all that is required on my engine. This makes me think that it must be from an Impreza, but apparently they didn’t offer the 2.2 until 1995...which should make it OBD2. Also, the Cam Position Sensor I have is different than all replacements I see offered which further makes me question what I have. Mine has no connector on the sensor...just a wire leading to another connector. Maybe I’m making things more difficult than needed but I want to be sure before I spend 200 bucks on a sensor that may be wrong. Thanks for the help. wtdash
Hi, The CAM and Crank sensors should be accessible w/out removing anything. Just a 10mm bolt holding them in. I've not seen a Chiltons - maybe that's for the 1.8 in the Loyales as the Legacy model didn't start 'til '89 and Impreza was '93???? But lots of pics online - Show them - like this: https://osakajdmmotors.com/subaru-legacy-2-2l-engine-jdm-ej22-bd-tm752rrbaa-fwd-lsi.html The Impreza '95-'98 EJ22 is the same as the Legacy. The intake manifolds of all the SOHC EJ22s from '90-'98 are interchangeable. The harness is different (see below) as is the TPS around '95 - and OBD2, I believe - as you noted. But the older models did have the wiring that included the connector that ran to a bracket under the TB vs. the newer style that was just a plug. And I SaH wouldn't buy a new one. Ebait, or preferably a local used auto parts yard/pullNsave would have one (or 10).
