3rd Gen >> 4th Gen Compatibility

Disclaimer: The search bar is not broken, but this is kind of a specific question I haven't been able to find a clear answer to yet.

Some context:

I currently have a 2009 2.5i and I'm getting a very loud mechanical whine coming from the transmission when rolling in gear and in neutral. I had the differentials and transmission flushed about 1000 miles ago to which I was told the differential fluid looked fine, but the transmission fluid was black. The whine has since gotten louder and I'm getting the feeling I'm about to grenade my 5MT any minute now.

The actual question:

I have a 2002 Legacy L with a 5MT sitting around collecting rust with a good transmission, new clutch, and bad fly wheel. Is it possible to swap the 3rd gen transmission to the 4th gen? I still have some research to do on final drives and gear ratios, but I figured someone on here may be more knowledgeable than I on these matters.

I apologize for the lengthy post, but I wanted to offer as much context as possible in case I have a smaller (or heaven forbid, a bigger) problem than I think.

Thank you all

They are probably close but you would want to check on the gear ratios and may look them both over really well to make sure all the connections are the same for the shift linkage and electrical connectors.
