05' 2.5 n/a bottom end the same as 10' 2.5 n/a bottom end?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some compatibility clarification please.

I have a 2010 Impreza 2.5i Premium that spun a rod bearing on me thismorning (90% sure that's what happened).

I also have a 05 Legacy 2.5i (totaled last year do to accident) that I'd like to use as a donor for a bottom end swap and before I commit to getting the 2 cars in the same place and pulling them apart I'd like to verify this will work.

What I DO know is the heads and intakes are different (my 2010 have variable valve heads and NON-tumble valve intake, the 05 has tumble valve intake and NON-variable valve heads) So I'll be keeping the top end with the car. Also the oil pans are different (due to exhaust manifold design changes) so I'll be swapping the oil pans.

Can I swap the 2010 top end and oil pan onto the 2005 block with no other issues?

Nearest I can tell from the Subaru EJ engine wiki page, these are both EJ253 engines (door plaque on the 2010 Impreza confirms this. I don't have access to the donor car at the moment) and I'm pretty sure the internals and compression ratios are the same but I'd like a 2nd opinion from those that may have done similar.

Also the 2010 has an 4EAT and the 2005 donor has a 5MT. I assume there is no reason for the flex plate and trans to cause an issue.

Thanks a lot,

Caine

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
