Ovcoursitsilver
A friend sent me this photo of a Legacy oil filter that had leaked due to over-tightening, he says, and the engine had lost most of its oil. I don't see much spilled oil below the filter. Has anyone heard of this or experienced it themselves?
ammcinnis
A friend sent me this photo of a Legacy oil filter that had leaked ... That may not be the correct filter for the 2.5 H4. It's definitely not the 15208AA15A (blue) filter currently specified by Subaru for the engine. Ovcoursitsilver
Apparently it’s the factory-installed filter that comes at delivery. I’m pretty sure my car was delivered with a black filter. (15208AA168??). The car was said to have only 1000 km on it.
capttris
Everything looks SUPER clean for an engine that lost "most" of it's oil from a leaking filter. I don't see ANY mess, other than a little oil in the basin around the filter. But if this was the factory-installed filter and the car is brand new, I would certainly head to the dealer for another filter and free oil change, and have them clean up the oil in the basin. bluesuby
The worst case scenario I have heard is when the gasket from the filter being replaced is left on the motor, and creates leakage because the new filter isn't properly seated. Easy to check but easy to forget.
Ovcoursitsilver
So has nobody actually experienced this or know someone who has? Isolated incident?
YeuEmMaiMai
I had that happen a few times and it was from the tech not cleaning up after themselves....I just sprayed it down with brake clean and no more issue
laz
I had a Subaru tech do the opposite. Not tighten it enough and turn on the car. My whole engine was splashed with oil! That was a mess that he had to clean. ---
Ovcoursitsilver
I don’t think I’ll be losing sleep over leaky oil filters but I will be checking for leaks after filter changes from now on. At least the filter is where it can be easily inspected.
