Ball Joints... yay

Getting ready to replace my drivers side lower ball joint. I came up with a “tool” to use to pull out the old one. What I haven’t come up with, any tricks or advice for reinstallation?

Be very careful with the pinch bolt that holds the top of the ball joint, there's a good chance it will break. If it breaks, you'll have to drill it out, or replace the steering knuckle.

 

If you can use heat like in the video below, seems like that's the best way to attack it. I didn't, I just tried penetrating oil for a week, still broke mine.

I ended up buying 2 new spindles when I did mine. Both bolts were seized but I did get them out with lots of heat. I would try to avoid spreading the spindle where the ball joint gets clamped. I ended up snapping the ear off on one spindle. Once you get it out it's not bad getting it back in just make sure you clean the rust out of the hole.

After you pull the ball joint out of the cup, use a wire brush cup in a drill to clean it out. With the bolt out of the knuckle, it should slide in once cleaned. I put antiseize all over the knuckle and ball joint when I install them.
