1991 Subaru auto fuel rail swap to 96 legacy, will it work

Recommended Posts

I have a 91 with gray caps and they keep failing, instead of replacing crappy injectors id rather just replace the rail. The only 90s Subaru I could find was a 96 with red caps, I took the risk and bought them. Now I'm looking online and I keep seeing things like ecu and maf swap, lack of compatibility, etc. My question is did I just spend money unnecessarily or can the 96 rails fit and run properly in my 91.

the '96 rails - as long as from another SOHC - should bolt up OK...note that yours may have spacers where they bolt to the intake manifold.....I think you'd KEEP those w/the '96 rails. ...but if they leak remove 'em.

If yours is the 5-speed they DID have a different MAF/ECU than the Automatics in '90-'91. But I'm not 100% sure if there's enough difference to be an issue.

They used those same red caps on the '92-'94 Legacy, too.

Due to wiring differences on the TPS or IAC (can't recall) I don't think the '92+ ECU will work on the '90-'91 - could be wrong.

Go search on Legacy Central BBS, too.
