Potential Electronic ebrake issue?

The e-brake must be retracted to allow room for the new pads. Dealerships use Subaru Select Monitor software (~$4k IIRC), but it can easily be done with hand tools. The most popular tool for hobbyists seems to be a kit sold by Harbor Freight, and there are a few sold on Amazon and E-Bay.
