When do the Boomerang LED lights turn on?

I was wondering when the wrap-around Boomerang LED lights on the headlight assembly turn on? I know Subaru decided that the highbeam lights in dimmed mode are technically the daytime running lights, but the boomerang lights look better.

 

Is there a specific instance when they turn on?

If you use the auto mode, it's when it's fairly dark outside (or if you enter a garage or tunnel or something like that). There's a light sensor - I believe it's near the windshield somewhere.

or... you can buy a kit from diode Dynamics or some other companies out there - they hijack the C-lights (boomerangs you stated) for a pretty sharp daytime running light and turn signal. I think these are in my future...

On 2018s they are on the second you turn the car on as DRLs.

 

In the older models, you need to turn on your parking lights and they will come on.

OP should say, but saying his DRL's are dimmed high beams means it isn't one of the new ones.
