SPEC B interior to 05 detailed walkthrough.

*READ WALKTHROUGH BEFORE STARTING INSTALL. AS YOU MAY NEED TO AQUIRE SOME PARTS TO MAKE IT WORK*

- Hey guys. I've done a couple spec b interior swaps for 05 cars, and found the available walkthroughs to be missing a lot of useful details. Or the pictures have disappeared since the walk through was posted.

Magnuson and I kinda fumbled through the install of my 2009 spec.b interior. But got it done.

Over the past weekend I also installed an 07 spec b interior. There are a few differences between the 07 seats and the 08/09 seats.

- I'll be posting a walkthrough that highlights the differences, along with some extra "pro tips" that you may find useful if you started out with a tan interior, and don't have black plastics to finish off your new interior.

- 07 seats will be the focus of this walkthrough.. But I'll make sure to highlight the extra steps required for 08/09 seats in RED. (I'LL ALSO HIGHLIGHT EXTRA STEPS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAD TAN SEATS)

- Be patient with the post for a few days. I'm doing this while splitting my attention with work.

- First things first. You must aquire your interior.

This interior is from a 2007 spec b. It will be going into a 2005 outback. Unfortunately the rear backrest can't be used in the wagon. But the rear lower cusion and the fronts will be used.

- DRIVER SEAT -

- Go get your car, and pull out your driver seat.

This seat is easy. AANNNNNNDDD you'll get to keep the memory positioning option...

- As you can see, both seats look almost identical..

- The black power plug is where the seats differ. 2005 plug only has Two wires. 07-09 power plug has Four.

- No need to cut wires. We will simply re-pin the plugs.

- To do this, you'll need something flat, or something pointy.. either way, it must be small enough to get under the clip that holds the pins in..

- Lift the clip, and just slide the wires out.

http://i.imgur.com/2AkinoZ.jpg

- The plug for the 05 seat will require popping off the retainer clip, before removing the pins.

*Be sure to keep track of what side the colors were on, so you know what side to put them back into.*

- Move the plug from the 05 seat to your spec b seat.. you'll only be using the two power wires. (The larger black and red wires).

http://i.imgur.com/ZlLG6PQ.jpg

- You can leave the other two just hanging. But I chose to bend them back, and wrap them with tape.

- Put all the plugs back, and you are ready to install the Driver seat.

*08/09 SEATS* You aren't done... keep reading.

- 08/09 seats are missing a limit sensor that the 05-07 seats have.

- It's held on with rivets. So you'll need to drill them out to get it off.

- I just coiled up the wire and zip-tied the sensor to the bottom of my 09 seat. Just make sure to leave enough slack to plug it into the cars wire harness, when you go to install the seat.

- 08/09 seats also have a differnt seatbelt.

- 05 harness requires a seatbelt with two plugs. So you will either have to steal the buckle off your old seat, or source an 05 buckle... just depends on your original color. If you had tan 05 seats, you'll probably want to go find a black 05 buckle.

- Put on your 05 buckle, give your seats a good clean, and you're all ready to install your 08/09 driver seat!

- PASSENGER SEAT -

- The passenger seats are completely different. There is no way to rewire the 07+ seats, to work with the 05 computers... the car just will not accept the 07+ setup. SOOO..... We will be swapping the entire base assembly.

- Start breaking down the Spec B seat.

- You don't need to remove the belt buckle. I just already had, before realizing that I didn't need to.

- The left hinge cover is held on with Two screws, and one clip.

- Move around to the right side.

- The right cover is held on with one screw on the back, one clip on the side, and a metal bracket that sits in a pocket on the cover.

- Be aware that you need to pull the front end of the cover out AND up. If you pull straight out, you risk breaking off of the pocket for the metal bracket.

- Jump to the 05 seat, and remove plastic covers.

- The left cover is held on with just two screws.. one on the side. One in the back.

- Now we have to remove the seat base from the rails..

- Four bolts hold them together.

- We won't be needing the rails. You can trash them, if you want.

- Now that we have the Bracket off, we need to seperate the cushion from the base.

- The cushion is held on with a series of clips and hog rings.

- There's a few more hog rings hidden under the front flap, after you get the clip off.

- The cushion will come right off now. Again, we won't be needing the base. So you can do whatever you want with it.

- we need to pull the 05 seat apart now...

- Just like the Spec B seat, the backrest is held on with just 4 bolts.

http://i.imgur.com/wPWNXww.jpg

- This backrest has 4 wires, instead of 3. The extra one is located on the side of the frame. Unplug these and the backrest will be free from the base.

- This seat is less involved than the Spec B seat. The cushion can be removed without splitting the base and the mounting bracket.

- There's one plastic clip on all 4 sides. Along with the leather hooked over a couple metal hangers... (The front clip on this seat was broken)

- Fitting the Spec B cushion to the 05 base...

- The front hog rings line up perfect with this bar that runs across the front of the seat.

- Move to the left side of the seat.

- none of the clips line up with anything useful. So we have to improvise.

- I used a hole punch and a ziptie, to hold things together.

- The leather ends up getting in the way of the backrest bolt holes. Best solution was to cut the extra material away.

- Right side now.

- Got a similar situation on this side. But I folded the extra material under the cushion, rather than cutting it.

- Need to fold it to keep access to the backrest bolt holes, and the seatbelt mount.

- Held it down with more zipties... (ended up with two ties. Forgot to get a picture.)

- Back Side

- Pull the flap around the bottom of the seat..

http://i.imgur.com/S6DIo9o.jpg

- One corner of the flap already has a hole in it. So I punched a matching hole in the other corner. There's a couple brackets that are perfect for running a ziptie through.

- Your base convertion is now complete... Backrest is next.

*IF YOU HAD TAN SEATS!! You're not done. Keep reading*
