Changed the fluids on both front and rear diffs. Mileage at the time was 106,616. Previous fluid change had been at 62,002 miles. Went with Amsoil 75W90 Severe Gear for both. The front diff drain plug was an absolute bastard to get off. I actually had to enlist the help of a friend for that part. The plug is only supposed to be torqued to 50 ft/lbs, but even with a two foot breaker bar, it was sliding me by myself across the pavement on my back. Took both of us, one holding the head of the breaker bar, and the other wrenching, to break the damn thing loose. That said, all new fluids in the car felt fantastic.

And this is what all the rapid-fire maintenance and additions preceding this were for: Autocross with the Windy City Miata Club! The event was held at the Boomers stadium in Schaumburg, IL. This ended up being the only performance driving event I was able to attend for all of 2020, but it was worth it. The day started out very rainy and wet, but eventually dried out so we started being able to put down much better times, although the rain action shots made for some incredible pictures. The silver STI and black Civic are my two buddies that I went with as well, we drove together most of the day. And yes, 361 was an intentional number choice.

Here's a couple videos from the event, one an in-car run, and one from the outside of the three of us.

Attended a Summer Nights 2020 car show and festival. Along with attending the show, I was also booked to provide DJ services for the festival portion of the event, which was pretty cool and got me free entry into the show car area. It was a really cool event and I had a great time, but it pretty much turned me off from shows and DJ bookings for the rest of the year. Despite the event organizers stating masks were required at all times, the majority of people were not wearing them properly and staff was not doing anything about enforcing the mandate (and often not wearing masks themselves). Made me uncomfortable considering this was still Summer 2020 and in the depths of Covid.

That said, still had a fun time and got some good pictures. Ice Silver looks awesome under overcast skies. And parking on the grass always makes any car look lower.

Replaced my junkyard factory lip spoiler with a SYMS Carbon Lip Spoiler. The carbon work on this spoiler is gorgeous, and the quality and fitment from a genuine manufacturer is immaculate. The carbon version of this spoiler is discontinued and MSRP was ¥80,000 originally, and I snagged it on a killer deal. I opted for this lip spoiler because it sits almost entirely on the back surface of the trunk, which leaves the top To my knowledge, this is also the only one of its kind in North America. Super happy with it.

Having the OEM lip spoiler removed and the SYMS lip installed allowed me to finally properly mock up the spoiler I had planned to mount: Wangan SPL Trunk Spoiler originally for Legacy BE5. Being that 3rd gen trunks and 5th gen trunks are exactly the same width (which I confirmed years back with the Blitzen spoiler), I knew this would fit well. I picked this spoiler up after watching it it sit on Yahoo.jp auctions for over a year. I finally sprung for it, and took delivery back in July. The idea to pair a raised spoiler with a lip spoiler was inspiration taken from the Mine's R34 Skyline trunk spoiler setup, and landing the Syms lip made that possible, as it leaves more of the top surface of the trunk open than any other lip spoiler option. I really like the look of this spoiler as I wanted something raised, but not as big as an STI spoiler, and I think this hits the 2000s tuner car vibe that I love best.

I also happened to find a 2001 Wangan SPL parts catalogue on YAJ as well. Here's some pictures of the spoiler in the catalogue.

fDIeO0F.jpg

1Exj80t.jpg

And the inspiration for running a raised spoiler + a carbon lip, the Mine's R34. I used this car with this bodykit for many years in an arcade racing game, which is why I was familiar with how the back end looked, and the Syms lip sparked the idea.

AaXkDxx.jpg

Ironically, I came across another listing on YAJ that I *THOUGHT* was a second Wangan SPL spoiler, listed at a very low price, so I picked that up as well. It wasn't till I had them side by side that I realize how different they are. That said, both spoilers are stylistically very similar, especially when not side-by-side, and it turns out the black spoiler is from an ER34 Skyline 25GT/GTST (non-GTR). The Wangan spoiler is MUCH lighter than the ER34 spoiler, about 5 lbs compared to over 20 lbs, so the Wangan is the one I ended up going with.

Decided to plastidip my stock wheels white this season for no other reason that I kept seeing them so covered in salt the previous year that they appeared white. Stock 17x7.5 +48’s on 215/55/17 General Altimax Arctic 12’s, plastidipped Gloss White and spaced out 25mm all around (actually 35mm in the front to offset the 10mm per side I lost from my tS control arms, evens out to square). Did the dipping myself with a kit from DipYourCar, I didn’t do a perfect job by far but still came out pretty good. Happy with the switch up to the look and the improved fitment from the previous year.

Picked up something I had been wanting since the first day I bought my car: a GT hood. Found one in brand new condition, unpainted, with scoop insert, 1.5 hours from me, for only $150. Best prospect I've had other than finding one of the 47 Ice Silver Metallic GT hoods in existence. Went up with my buddy who has a pick-up truck because there's no way too fit a hood inside the Legacy sedan, and I didn't want to make a 100 mile trip without a hood in winter. Test-fitted the hood as soon as we got back to my buddy's place. Not going on until I get it painted, so for now it's living in its box in my garage.

So after more than 6 months of procrastination, I finally decided what to do about my missing left axleback. I had sourced an intact used mid-pipe from another local 3.6R who had already done full exhaust (which thankfully he gave me for free), and my friend and I swapped in the new mid-pipe with new hardware. We attempted to re-mount the damaged left Nameless, and unfortunately discovered that it was damaged more than we initially thought. The curb impacted the back of the muffler can, bending the muffler itself upwards at a strange angle. We tried and tried to straightened, with heating, hammering, etc, and could never get it back to an angle that it could be mounted again. So eventually, I just got a new Nameless left axleback. Thankfully it was the left side that took the hit, as I was able to just order the 2.5i axleback rather than a full new double muffler kit, and bolted it up to finally have complete exhaust again. Check the instagram link for a vid of starting my car without the mid-pipe attached, and me cackling like a buffoon.

Moved into a new place! After living in the same apartment/condo for over 18 years (and as such, my Legacy living in the parking lot the entire time), for the first time in my ownership of it, my Legacy got to spend the night in a garage. My landlord of my previous place (who had been an awesome landlord) finally decided they wanted to sell the property and move out of state, and my options were to buy it from them or move, and I decided it was finally time to get on with my life. The move was tough, and there was a lot of emotional moments for me since up to that point I had only ever known my previous place, and it was a bit hard to let go, but the new place is fantastic, has a huge two-car garage as you can see, two floors, a great kitchen, and is overall just a huge improvement over the previous condo. All in all, a big step forward.

Switched back over to the summer setup. Konig Rennform 18x9 +38 on Continental DWS 06 255/40/18. Took my time and leisurely cleaned each wheel before mounting it, and applied Karbon quick detail spray to the wheels and body for a nice shine. It was so nice having my own space to do this for once instead of having to do it in a parking lot or at a friend’s place. And a nice sunset to finish off the day.

Did something I've been wanting to do for a good number of years now: H6 emblem fender badges. These emblems are originally from JDM BPE/BLE H6 4th Gen Legacys/Outbacks trunks & tailgates, and I think they look very nicely in place on a 5th gen's fenders. I've owned one of these badges for at least 3 years, and finally sprung for a second to get this little project done.

Small little project. Since the Wangan SPL steering wheel that I have installed is actually for VA/VM chassis, not BM/BR, it only fits about 90%. One of the things that doesn't quite fit very well is the bottom trim of the wheel. I had been to a junkyard recently to check out a 5th gen they received, and snagged the wheel trim from that car for this project. Also recently picked up a dremel tool, so I could finally do what was needed. I notched the trim piece and grind down the pegs so that it would seat more flush against the wheel skeleton. Just a small quality of life improvement, but fun practice with my dremel.

I recently dropped my Wangan SPL trunk spoiler and replacement Bayson R front lip off with my paint guy, and got some project pictures from him on the spoiler. The spoiler itself is roughly 20 years old, and as one would expect had some wear and damage, hairline cracks, etc. These are progress pictures of the repairs he made to the spoiler prior to painting it.

Undertook a very large project over the weekend that has been long overdue and even longer needed:

-Upgrade front top hats to STI Group N (front passenger top hat has been torn since last summer, so this is not only an upgrade but a needed repair)

-Upgrade rear top hats to reinforced 14-18 Forester top hats

-Super Pro Roll Center Adjustment Kit

-SPC Rear Toe Arms (factory toe arms were seized)

YxAn7LF.jpg

Firstly, the top hats. My passenger front tap hat has been torn around the bearing since roughly late summer/early fall. I'm 99% positive it happened during my last autox from last year, which took place in a parking lot. I remember a specific right-to-left harsh transfer on one of my later runs that resulted in a very noticeable *POP* from the front right. And since that point, and gradually more ever since, I've had a very obnoxious creaking, binding noise from the suspension whenever I turned the wheel. It wasn't until I got the top hat off during this repair that I realized how bad it was, and am thankful I made it all the way through winter (with copious drifting no less!) without an issue. Video links below show my steering sound before replacement, the strut off the car and the extent of the top hat damage, and the steering sound (lack thereof) after replacement. Smooth like butter again.

BgPzsBv.jpg

ALRX2ud.jpg

pqtkaZ9.jpg

And the reinforced Forester top hats for the rear, just because why not if I'm doing the front, nothing wrong with some extra sturdiness back there.

DlBbNC9.jpg

qeDXWUX.jpg

Onto the rear toe arms, doing these because it was discovered during my last alignment that my factory toe arms were seized and could no longer be adjusted. The SPC ones offer a much easier adjustment method, and are beefier than the factory ones as well. These were a MAJOR pain in the but to remove and resulted in having to cut off both factory arms with a sawzall.

nTu6jSI.jpg

NOuYvF2.jpg

And lastly, the long, LONG overdue Roll Center Kit. I had tried to have my shop install the Whiteline Roll Center kit previously when I switched from Eibach to H&R Springs, and for some odd reason, they said they could not get the ball joints to seat properly. I don't know specifically why, especially because I've seen multiple other 5th gens run it, but I guess there is some variance in the size of the base of the bolt joints between the Super Pro kit and the Whiteline kit that would allow the Super Pro kit to seat properly. Either way, it was my first ever time doing tie rods and ball joints, and HONESTLY, despite all the horror stories I've heard about Subaru ball joints, this was actually the easiest and quickest part of the whole job. Of course, this was due in part to having the proper tools: a pickle fork, and the Astro 78620 Subaru Ball Joint Puller tool. I cannot recommend this tool enough. It turned removing the ball joints from what I've always heard to be a nightmare, to LITERALLY a 3-second task. And for $25, you literally cannot go wrong with this. Apparently a few other companies like Snap-On make a similar tool, but the Snap-on one is $150. Just get the Astro one. Included a video of my removing one of the ball joints, and an Amazon link for it.

https://www.amazon.com/Astro-Pneumatic-Tool-78620-Subaru/dp/B01JBJFK3C/

ogPLIri.jpg

And with that, off the alignment. My buddy set the left rear toe by eye and I set the right rear toe by eye and we both landed close but mine landed DEAD one. Pleased with myself.

51LxfPX.jpg

And with that, this feels weird to say, but I think my suspension is fully and finally... DONE? Until I finally go coilovers, I've done literally just about everything available for the suspension on this car, and let me tell you: It. Feels. INCREDIBLE. The car feels better than it's ever felt before, and feels like how it always should have. The amount of confidence I have in the corners is absurd now, it stays flat, bites in hard, and is extremely responsive. The ball joints/tie rods also finally solved my bump steer and virtually eliminated my highway wheel shake (only happened on one local highway with a very shoddy, rushed surface). I cannot wait to get this thing out on track with some sticky tires next month.

Here's my final suspension list for anyone interested, buy links can be found in my build thread linked in my signature, or you can google any of the part numbers.

Took delivery of an extremely rare part: Ganador LED Carbon Super Mirror for BM/BR (LM-61FCL) and Prova Blue Replacement Convex Glass for Ganador Super Mirror. These are carbon hydrodipped, not carbon fiber unfortunately. I've found evidence of only around 5-10 sets of these mirrors for BM/BR worldwide, so I'm super happy to have landed a set as they are a quintessential item for the 2000s tuner vibe I'm going for with my car. They are angled for RHD, so I grabbed the Prova convex glass to make them more usable for LHD. The previous owner tried (very poorly) to clear over the carbon print, and did a terrible job for it, so I'm going to be having these re-painted body color when I get around to this project.

Had Lamin-X Yellow Protective Film installed by a professional vinyl shop. I tried my hand at installing this the previous fall and cocked it up so badly and I had to re-order a piece. The vinyl guy did a great job with it, but even remarked how difficult the lamin-x is to work with due to the thickness and not being very pliable. He said if I were to do it again, he'd recommend just going with a normal yellow vinyl.

The aim with the yellow was to mimic the R&D Sport Legacy B4 GT300 car. Added a strategically placed Motul sticker to mimic further.

Also installed new freshly painted color-matched Bayson R lip, to finally replace my old lip that had been steadily losing more and more piece of itself over the last few years. I really like the look of the color-matched V-Limited lip. Note to self and others: don't use bolts and nuts to attached your lip, especially in a salt-ridden area. Took me 1.5 hours with a dremel to get all the old bolts removed. Live and learn.

Finally nutted up and committed to a trunk spoiler and am so happy I went with the Wangan SPL wing. Enlisted an old friend's help who does spoiler installations at his work. He came over and helped me get everything setup, punched, drilled, and finally mounted. We had a phantom hole that swear to god no matter how many times we measured, seemed like it kept moving, but we managed to get it mounted evenly, and despite the hole being a bit of a mess, is hid under the spoiler entirely and realistically should never be seen again. Truthfully, I'd sooner get another trunk if I wanted to switch up the spoiler rather than remove this one. We also lost a washer inside the trunk that remains there to this day.

I'm ecstatic with the finished look, and adore how it rounds out the general shape and profile of the car. It hits exactly the style I wanted, and the spoiler is unbelievably light, less than 5 pounds, so the trunk remains 100% functional with no additional stress. Ironically, the front quarter view is probably my favorite angle of it.

As an afterwards to the previous update, and to kind of round out my 4+ year long odyssey to decide on a spoiler, I actually bought a second spoiler from Yahoo.jp auctions, thinking that it was another Wangan SPL BE5 spoiler, as it very much looked like it was in the listing pictures, and the price was good. It wasn't until I received the second spoiler that I realized the difference between them. While very stylistically similar, they are pretty obviously different side-by-side, and after some research, it turned out that the second spoiler I bought is actually an OEM Nissan spoiler from an ER34 Skyline 25GT/GTST. That said, it's pretty easy to see how one could be mistaken for the other, and some old documentation I found from Wangan SPL actually denoted their spoiler as "ER34 styled".

I did some mock-ups with the ER34 spoiler as well, and both honestly looked really good. It was a hard decision between the two (other than my brand-whoreness for Wangan SPL). The Wangan SPL spoiler is significantly lighter than the ER34 spoiler, about 5lbs compared to about 21 lbs. The ER34 spoiler also has removable stands, whereas the Wangan spoiler is one solid piece. The ER34 spoiler is a tad higher, and angles back a bit more than the Wangan SPL one.

I ended up selling the ER34 spoiler to another 3.6R owner on Facebook, and it honestly looks fantastic, and I highly recommend it to other 5th gen owners looking for a stylish, unique spoiler that isn't just slapping an STI wing on. One other nice thing about the ER34 spoiler is that with the stands being removable, there are other stands that could be swapped in if the owner wants to chance up the look. Notably, the NISMO version stands, Nissan part # 96030-RNR40.

Good lord, is that *REALLY* the last time I updated this thread? Nearly two years, utterly ridiculous levels of procrastination.

I'm going to try and catch up as much as I can on build updates, and having 20+ months worth of updates is a lot, so I'm going to try and keep the updates as concise as possible and where applicable, as I have a tendency to be overly wordy. In the effort to try and get back on top of my own build thread, going to do my best to include only the most pertinent information.

APRIL 27TH, 2021

In preparation for an upcoming track day, dressed the 'barge' up as the then-stuck Evergreen ship the Ever Given, with a huge text "EVERGREEN" across both sides, printed by my buddy Andrew who was also a 5th gen owner at the time. Proceeded to get myself "stuck" in a multitude of places just to rack up the giggles.

MAY 8TH, 2021

Subaru Speed Expo 2021. Held at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL, on south course. Overall a really fun day, car was in decent shape and performed well. Day started out sunny and unfortunately started sprinkling for the afternoon sessions. My girlfriend was able to come along for the event and went on a few ride-alongs and had an awesome time too. The Evergreen barge gag was a hit with the other attendees and the track staff even let me stage a picture where I got "stuck" at the end of the pits. It was hilarious and made for an awesome pic.

This event was doubly special to me because my father was able to attend and see me race/drive for the first time ever. Racing is several generations deep in my family; my grandfather I never met raced, my father raced up until I was bourn, and my brother (who is 20 years my senior) raced when he was younger too. My Dad retired from racing when I was only about a year old, so I never got to share it directly with him. Regardless, it was always one of the things I felt able to contact with my Dad most on. He was 76 years old at the date of this event, and it would end up being the last time I ever saw my father. He and my stepmother relocated to Minnesota roughly a week after this event, and that was where they remained until my father's unfortunate passing in December 2022. My father had started having memory problems (and would eventually end up succumbing to dementia), but while he was at the event, he was all smiles and seemed just like his old self again. He was almost 4 decades removed from the racing world at this point, and had soured his relationship with cars due to a shitty late-life employment at CarMax, but he said something at this event that will stick with me until the day I die, and that still brings me to tears typing this now over 2 years later: in response to watching me race and enjoying the day, he said to me "It made me miss it." Love you Dad, miss you.
