bradykp Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Have any members recently sold or purchased a 2010 Legacy GT? I'm a bit of a novice to selling a vehicle and may have to sell it. Trying to way my options of selling vs trading it in on a new impreza or legacy (or outback or forester depending on what the wife likes).
dgoodhue Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 If you are the original owner, the Subaru GTP will be really low because of the miles. 100,000 miles is the maximum mileage for 2010 before 0.20/mile deduction. You can always just ask the dealer up front what the trade in is for your car. Be upfront that you are undecided if you want to trade it in or sell it privately. If it is in good condition and you trust selling it privately, I have had good luck selling my cars on craigslist. I do a little research and usually price my car between trade in and retail, with some assumption the buyer will negotiate. I would want more than trade in as my final price.
cseagle08 Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 I have found that it's really easy to privately sell something if it's less than $10K, and you have the title on hand - using craigslist and/or Facebook marketplace. If you still have a loan/lien on it, finding the right person to buy it may be burdensome and then trading it in is certainly the easiest. But in snow territory I can imagine any turbo-subaru should be a quick seller.
xjLGTxj Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Looking around $13,800 retail and $11,100 trade value. IF they are using NADA which most dealers do. I definitely overpaid for mine but did care cause I wanted the car.
bradykp Posted March 13, 2018 Author Posted March 13, 2018 $13,800? i thought it was closer to $10,000 (in new jersey). i spoke to the guy at the dealer and he said i could probably get $10,000 PP and he could only do between $6,000-$7,000 trade. He said don't trade it, sell private party.
nads Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 You'll get more privately unless what your trading it in on is heavily discounted. Mods add no value to trade in. I've sold a few cars, some with the title at the bank, just be up front about it, know your local laws and DMV process to sell the car privately like Bill of Sale, title transfer, etc. All the work involved in selling the car will depend on sweat equity of dealing with people, test drives, etc. If your very limited on free time, a trade in might be worth the loss to save the time and hassle of a private sale.
raider600 Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Most dealers will use black book value, which is super low. I was just at the dealer last week and my 2010 3.6r premium with 64k miles would only fetch 6900 at first pass. Got them up to 7500 but still passed on the trade up.

Agreed, make sure both parties sign title and make sure it is dated so the buyer is then liable. Having a generic purchase sold/as is printed off the interwebsnet is also a good idea. Trading is definitely easy but you will get way less.
