kurtis9813 Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 Just swapped a 95 2.2 auto motor into a 99 Legacy Outback auto. She runs good, but with the stock gearing meant for the 2.5 she is extremely sluggish. Looking to see if I can get some more pep out of the engine. Im planning on doing the msd coil pack mod and possibly a lightweight crank pulley. Any expereince with the crank pulley swaps? Should I bother with a cold air intake? Does anyone know if the injectors in the 2.2 differ from the 2.5 as I have the 2.5 injectors from the old motor. I know im not going to ever have a fast car here but i’m just looking to get a little more pep out of it. Any help/experience would be appreciated.
Brighton96 Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 The lightweight crank pulley on the 2.2 just helps with throttle responsiveness. I wouldn't do a traditional cold air intake with a pod filter, it caused my 2.2 to bog down too much for my liking, the only way to make it tolerable is to run the smallest pod filter I could find. If anything, create a hybrid set up with the stock airbox and a performance panel filter. Also, it wouldn't hurt to run a grounding kit on it, that helped mine more then anyone would think, it became a lot more linear with what I'd ask of it and what it'd do. The injectors are different as well, the 2.2's have injectors under 300cc and 2.5 are typically 300cc+ I think. Also, going much larger in injector flow will just make it smoke and run rich, you'd need a ECU and MAP that can support it.
kurtis9813 Posted March 6, 2018 Author Posted March 6, 2018 I’m currently running the stock 2.5 ecu with the 2.5 map/maf sensors. I might try out the 2.5 injectors and see how she runs.
Brighton96 Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 I'm pretty sure the injectors from the 95 2.2 and 99 2.5 are different styles. The 2.2 has the short stubby side feed ones and the 2.5 has the long skinny top feed style. So I don't think you can just change styles without swapping intakes or at minimum, fuel rails.
eagleeye Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 short of building that 137hp EJ22 to a turbo I don't think its going to be a fast car. EJ25D were not either. (behind the wheel rather pokey in the mid range, vs. how the later EJ251 relates to the 4EAT) _____ the typical goal of such a swap it to make a nice 2 lane cruiser out of a unrusted EJ25D car that would ordinarily land in the junk yard. (glad you found a old 95 auto EJ22 to put in it.... ) the injectors maybe the same though, cross reference the part #s on a subaru dealer site,. maybe you got some clogged, recent posts on such issues on the 95-99 section on the outback board.
Thor294 Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 what did you replace on the engine when you swapped it in?
Stevo F Posted March 7, 2018 Posted March 7, 2018 I have a similar setup- 1997 Legacy GT with a '95 EJ22 installed by the previous owner. As soon as we bought it I noticed it had less power than my '98 Legacy L wagon with an EJ22 from the factory. Also, the GT barely gets 20 MPG in mixed driving where the wagon would do 23- 24 MPG with the same type off driving. So far, I've done the same 2 mods to both cars- MSD coil + got rid of the resonator style air intake tube and replaced with the '95 style air tube. Over time the wagon seemed to gain a couple MPG and I'm hoping the GT will also. I'm thinking there's not a lot more I can do to improve the pickup on the GT, however.
