RideOn2
Hi Guys/Girls 1st post here. My 2005 Outback XT seams to have jumped time. My son had the car out Xmas shopping and he heard a bang and within a few minutes he saw smoke coming out the back. He continued to drive the car home and coasted into the drive way. Pretty sure the engine is toast. Now what to do. The car has been well maintained and is in great condition. Has about 100K on it. Looking for advice thoughts range from Junk haul a way to finding a new/used engine for it. Perhaps you all could let me know some values as rolling chasie $$$ where best to find a replacement engine..... I live in Concord,Ma. Regards RH Hope my 1st post didn't break any rules
relative4
I would do a compreasion test before throwing the car away.
Notorious
Any check engine lights? Should probably properly diagnose what happened first before deciding the next move. Best case scenario is it over boosted and hit fuel cutoff and the smoke was just condensation from the cold. What color was the smoke? Does it smoke if you start it up or will it not start? RideOn2
I went out to rescue him and followed him home, he jumped in the car and drove off before I could say I wanted it towed home. I have never heard such awful mechanical sounds coming out of a car before. It will start.....but with really awful sounds, smoke is white/blueish. Wondering where to buy a long block and start fresh, this is a car my son uses for work and school.
traildogck
I am not sure about CT. Out here on the Front Range (Denver) LGTs and OBXT with bad motors are $1000-$1200 all day long. Unfortunately. Again, the only sources I know for motors are local. Maybe someone else can comment on a more local supplier to you. ehsnils
Seems to me that you need to pull the motor and check what's broken before making a decision. If it's a dead turbo and has been driven then it's a new engine time.
Wasted Potential
If I buy a vehicle with a bad motor, I prefer to buy the vehicle with the bad motor still in it so I know how to take it apart haha. Mighy not be worth investing time to yank the motor if you're just going to sell it.
RideOn2
The cars in great condition, it's my nature to get things fixed.....on line searches are showing big prices on used engines. I was told via jdm that the 2.0 lt turbo would wrk.....not sure.
Wasted Potential
Just buy an EJ255 block from Heuberger Subaru in CO for $1700, rebuild your heads, swap things over, check the turbo, banjo bolt filters, new tune, and run it.

ehsnils
Pick apart the engine and post pics of what's broken. It's always easier to decide the way to go after the damage is assessed.

RideOn2
Update, The cause of problem stemmed from a broken cooling line from the transmission to the radiator, evidently some road debris kicked up and severed the line. My sons girlfriend was driving and got off the highway and when my son got to the car he drove it till it over heated. The car is now at Granet State Dyno in NH getting a new Short Block the heads redone, looking forward to starting with a 0 point engine.
sshole
You should have a talk with your son about watching that temperature needle...
JazzAvi8r
if that was my son, it would be a very one-sided conversation!
JmP6889928
If it jumped more than a single tooth, it would not run. I would be looking for some other things to cause the noises rather than assuming the engine is cashed in. I would be looking at turbo first and then begin to look at timing. ehsnils
Overheating so bad it has stalled can mean that it may be a new engine to get it on the road again.
