Volleyball
My woman grew up with manual trans so always set the parking brake. Well it failed a couple of years ago to the tune of $800. So with the new one she doesn't use it. I do on occasion to make sure it gets some exercise. Well it is indicating a failure on many starts even though it is not being set or released. I kept the old part and the box the replacement came in is the "C" version. They are up to D now. I searched and it seems there have been very few problems so odd that I have had 2. Anyone else have problems and not post? How often does everyone use theirs? Anybody knows of rebuilt units? If it fails solid I may go through the dealer and subaru to give me a break. foxrider28
There's plenty of talk about this problem it's just a year or 2 old. Just search "e-brake" in the 5th gen section. I found this thread and a few others talking about the module. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=223426
GTEASER
Mine acted wonky once at about 30k miles, blinking brake lights on the dash a lot for about 2 weeks and it would only work occasionally. Took it to the dealer and they did some sort of reset procedure to the controller using the SSM. Hasn't been a problem since and I use it every time I park the car. Currently at 54k miles. ehsnils
If you don't use it, then you don't know if it works whenever you really need it, it may get stuck because it's not used. If you always use it, then you realize that it don't work as soon as it's failed.
YeuEmMaiMai
mine was adjusted super tight from the factory and I had a chance to correct it when I did my rear brakes at 40K.. now it applies the brake and does not whine really hard like it used to. aperson
What makes you think the module is failing? Are you getting a CEL or flashing BRAKE light in the dash? I thought mine was going out due to the brake light randomly flashing at me when setting or disengaging the parking brake. I ended up manually adjusting the drum brakes in the rear the 2 times it's happened and that has fixed it so far. Just so you know my usage scenario I use my parking brake religiously so I know it's working if/when I'll need it.
ArmyVetMP
I have 181,xxx miles on my 2010 Legacy 2.5i with Electronic Parking/E-Brake. I use the brake every day, specifically if I am on any sort of incline/decline. The parking lot at my apartment building has a slant away from the building, so I always use it and have never had an issue as of this point. Volleyball
As stated the original got used all the time, the replacement occasionally. So the same car has had both treatment. There was a bulletin for the GT's which mine is not. The flashing light tells you its not working, it is part of the startup check so you don't have to use it to see if it works, it does that for you. Mine is an early car so it must have the original design, the replacement had a "C" at the end so there have been problems. They are up to "D" so my replacement was faulty. Good news is that the light has stopped coming on for the last few days. Inspection is due January so I am getting the car in next week in case the problem comes back. My other 10 never had a problem up until it was totaled due to a deer. I guess all of the other people with the same problem as me are not on this forum. Thanks to all that responded. ehsnils
Revision C does not necessarily have to be faulty just because there is a revision D out, sometimes the changes are made to save money in manufacturing.
