BH5 Legacy trans keeps limping then blowing

Recommended Posts

1999 Subaru Legacy (station wagon) GT-B (JDM, imported to Canada in 2014).

4 speed automatic with sportshift buttons on OEM Momo wheel.

No cruise control.

Was doing 100-120kph steady on the highway for 2-2.5 hours.

Engine temp gauge was fine, roughly just below half way.

All fluids checked and topped up.

All wheels within oem spec and all matching sizes.

Shell 91 premium fuel (no ethanol), not known to knock on this gas. Knocks on anything else.

Second time the trans blew for me(3rd time blown total; first time was previous owner):

Driving on highway in final gear (4th), doing roughly 100-120 kph steady for 2-2.5 hours.

All of a sudden, car downshifts abruptly to 3rd gear, refuses to upshift back to 4th as it should for doing 120kph. So, rpm’s stay high since its in 3rd now (auto trans limp mode?).

Move shifter into sport/manual mode to see which gear it says its in on the dash. It says 4th still, which was incorrect now. Try shifting up or down, trans doesn’t respond.

Check Engine light comes on, but goes off 5 minutes later. Couldn’t read the code later via OBD due to Japanese/JDM model of car.

Stop the car. Try starting from 0kph, goes forward somewhat fine and can get into 2nd and 3rd, but very rough shifts. Only seems to work if we use the shifter’s “1, 2, 3” modes (different than “sport/manual” mode).

Get into a parking lot. Try reverse. Reverse totally gone, just makes clunking and grinding noises (kind of like sheering metal) coming from the middle of car (trans).

Forward gears still somewhat work to get around the parking lot. Stop the car. Try forward again, now forward gears all totally gone too. Trans doesn’t seem to engage at all.

First time this occurred, they figured the incorrect trans was in the car from a previous swap 2 months prior. So, “incorrect gear ratio compared to rear diff” trans was running fine just for city driving for 2 months, then blew on the highway. Trans had 68xxxkm on it when swapped in. (engine is original EJ206 and has 99xxxkm on it, with a replaced head from a 78xxxkm engine. All belts, gaskets/seals, plugs, etc replaced also few months prior.)

Correctly matching trans was swapped in to match rear diff gear ratio (4.1 I believe or 4.44). Torque converter replaced both times also. Flex plate apparently fine/not bent or warped but I’m not certain. Fluids flushed.

Correct trans blew on highway after 2.5 hours, with maybe half hour of city driving prior to highway (as described in full above).

Latest work:

-New rear brake pads (Sept 20th) One still slightly rubs, can smell it sometimes.

-Replaced transmission (only 68,000km on it) This is the car's second trans to my knowledge. [this one blew also, car has now had 3 trans total, all blown]

-New radiator

-New front left CV boot

-New Interstate battery

-Installed new Kenwood speakers in front doors

Other recent work:

-Replaced the block (replacement block had 85,xxxKm)

-Head gaskets

-Valve cover gaskets

-Camshaft seals

-Spark plugs

-PCV valve and valve connector

-Knock sensor

-Timing belt

-Timing pulleys

-Serpentine belts

-Intake manifold gaskets

-Transmission fluid, oil, and coolant

More info on car:

-EJ206 sequential twin turbo engine. 265hp stock.

-17" Speedline wheels

-Lowered on Bilstein struts with pink STI springs.

-Tri material seats in front and rear - Leather/Suede/Fabric

-Dual sunroof

-HID headlights and LED fog lights

-2 extra driving modes: Power mode, and Hold mode

Any theories or opinions are greatly appreciated!
