Buying a one owner 2014 Legacy 2.5i

Recommended Posts

New to fourm and new to Subaru.

I’ve been shopping around and there’s quite a few Legacy’s around especially 5 and 6 generations out there.

This one has only 35 000 kms. I’ve been reading and watching quite a few YouTube videos.

Knowing what you know now about your Legacy is there anything you would be looking for or asking?

Was there a extended warranty available for the transmission?

I can't recall if the extended warranty covers the 2014 model or not, but a powertrain warranty isn't very expensive, but you could also set aside that money in case anything does happen and my guess is a cvt for a 2.5i wont break the bank anyway. As long as the car is running good and there are no issues, I don't see why with regular and on time maintenance it wouldn't be a good choice.

It will be a good car, enjoy it. Pay attention to the oil level for a few months after you get it to become familiar with any oil consumption tendencies, some will, and some won't, but don't EVER let the oil level get so low that the dash light is how you become aware of it. Put good oil in it and change it at regular intervals.

other than the issue with the t-stat, my car has been good to me... got it 2 years ago as a 19K mile lease return and now I am at 44K miles

Things of note

1. Dealer messed up the transmission and they had to put a Subaru Reman Trans in at 40K. How did they eff it up? Simple, the apes that they have for mechanics over tightened differential drain plug and that be all she wrote...

2. car had a defective t-stat.. SOA and the dealers involved were NEXT TO WORTHLESS in trying to get the issue resolved. SOA states they cannot go against the dealer and the local dealers said nothing wrong with the car despite

1. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME TO WARM UP

2. Fuel economy is 21 on the highway

The service manager at Luther Bloomington Said

1. 2010-14 cars have extremely poor heat output when you use the floor vents (da **** you say?)

2. Here buy a remote start

3. This fuel economy is normal

If this is how Subaru stands behind their product, well... in the future there will not be another one.

So I’m assuming your gas mileage improved when they repaired your thermostat?

KMS ...I guess you are Canadian. (although possibly from other metric lands).

the CVT and the engine both have a 160,000kms extended warranty on them.

I see complains from people with dead CVTs as initial posts on the outback forum. particularly when they don't have CVT fluid swaps and they have about 180,000kms on them. read of people getting initial CVT fluid swaps though at 168,000 in cars that were raced and abused off road, (fluid looked old,...but the CVT was still going strong).

here is the CVT 2010-15 warranty for canada. on a outback forum thread. (not sure if the LGT forum has that typed out anywhere with the particular Canadian wording).

http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/28-canada/458002-canada-cvt-warranty-10-year-160-000kms-2010-15-a.html

a the same length warranty also exists for the 2013-15 FB25B engine.

(some had bad rings, and gotten replaced / fixed by the company).....

when you get to the 160,000kms mark, you might consider a 3rd party power-train warranty on the car.

______

I think if I were to buy a FB25B car I would be putting 5w30 full synthetic in it vs. the 0w20 subaru originally spec'd for it. such 0w20 stuff although great for gas mileage, however is thinner then what I put in my snowblower that I leave outside.

and putting a little thicker oil in it should not void any warranty, ...not changing it and not having any receipts or documents should. (either way watch for oil consumption,...monitor, and report right away to subaru of canada).

here is a maint. schedule (find the outback/ legacy section).

Interested in your findings.

What are you paying? I'm going to pick up my 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5 Ltd tmrw!

I'm definitely excited! I've done a lot of research and I'm hoping this 2014 is as awesome as my 2005 2.5i was!

I have to keep an eye on oil consumption? Just check the dipstick every so often?

CVTs started being used how far back? I was hopeful that by 2014 they had worked out some of the kinks!

I've decided to purchase the extended warranty...they want to sell it to me for $1490 (I was told by another finance guy that they pay $1260 for it)...but at this point, I feel like arguing for what will only amount to a couple of dollars off / month on my payment. -- I'm getting such a good deal, I feel like...go ahead...keep it. Merry Christmas!
