Jgriff411
I haven't made the leap yet, but just wondering how well Apple Car-Play / Android Auto is working in the 2018 Legacy?
Pilot1226
I've used CarPlay in other cars, it's pretty standard. I love it. While I can't use my favorite Navigation app (Waze), it is flawless with everything else. And I like that it isn't distracting.
MrCobbs
It works well but my only pet peeve is that you can’t slide to seek through a lengthy song on the head unit when using CarPlay. You can however do so when using the USB music feature. Just like the previous person said too, it would be better to have Waze on there. The text reply and everything else works really well though. Pilot1226
If you use the steering wheel controls and hold it up or down doesn’t it seek?
pshadden
It's alright. I don't think its anything AMAZING or a must have, but it's useful. Sometimes I have trouble getting the HU to recognize my phone and the app to pop up on my main screen but when it works, it works well. I have found it more convenient to use the bluetooth since it actually gives you a notification when you get a text message instead of just popping up on the side bar. Unless I have a setting wrong and if so, let me know what to do to fix that.
Craig01b
It works well, but is a litttle proprietary when I want to use an app that is not on their list(android auto) Waze works well, and I can bring it up on the screen. My audio book app isn’t on the list, and android auto interferes when I try to,access it. I usually disable android auto, and listen to the book. A bit of a pain, and I haven’t spend any time on a workaround either.. Apple folks are out of luck with waze, the apple maps are proprietary. My wife’s iPhone won’t let waze up on the screen...... it explains why my phone isn’t apple....
Fraugher
Head over to Outback forums to get a bad taste about the new head units. New software release December 9 should help. I've got Android Auto going in my Honda and don't see what all the fuss is about... seems super clunky to me, integration in our '15 Subaru without it seems better. NewSubieLegacy
Here is my conversation with Subaru Customer/Retailer Services Department - Lana Downs: Me: Why does Subaru steering wheel button "Voice" not switch between Android Auto voice control and Subaru Starlink voice control? Subaru: The system does switch between Subaru voice and Siri Voice command systems with a short/long press but not currently for Android Auto assistant. Me: what will Subaru do about this oversight? The only option is to manually disconnect the Android Phone USB plugin while driving Subaru: If there is a firmware update in the future, the retailers will be notified and you can check with them at service visits. Me: This did not address my questions. 1) Is it being addressed? 2) When will it be corrected? Subaru: Your vehicle is operating as the system was designed. There are no plans to change the function at this time. My take is "screw you Android users".
Jgriff411
This new head unit def has me a little concern, especially when looking all the issues that have been discuss over on the Outback forums. Sure seems like Subaru rushed this version to production w/o some deep testing. Hopefully just software & hardware related.
fl4tdriven
The only issue I've had so far is when using Waze. After specifying the destination, the acceptance window pops up for a brief moment but then disappears almost instantly, which doesn't allow me to start navigating. I would be interested to see if anyone else is experiencing similar issues.

I have to assume that the Legacy & OB are pretty much the same build interior wise.
Fiatz79
Well.. WAZE is supporting WebLink now as well. Maybe a firmware update to support Weblink to get around it? Seems to be a more open platform. (We'll get WAZE support on IOS when Apple buys them). MrCobbs
It’s an IP thing and Google owns Waze so of course Apple isn’t playing well. I did see a video with someone jailbreaking an iPhone to get Waze to appear within CarPlay. I’m not recommending that though. Pilot1226
Yeah, I typically run the latest iOS version, so jailbreaking is not an option. I actually haven't JB since iOS 5 or 6, a long time ago. I'm sure I could rig something up with an older jailbroken iPhone 4 or 4S that's connected via Personal Hotspot on my iPhone 7 to get Waze going. But the whole point of this is that it is supposed to be easy and automatic.
windhammer
I bought this car partially just for Android Auto. It was horrible with my Galaxy S7 - specifically delays when running commands - but that S7 was on its way to the garbage. Got a Google Pixel 2, and everything works immediately - love google maps vs. the built in GPS, and all of the call/text/google assistant features. I also happen to use Plex to organize my home media and am able to ask for any song I have on my server at home in the car while driving which makes the kids happy

I have one as well, and fully agree with your point of google maps vs. built in GPS. So much better. I've discovered if I type in my destination when using Waze, I do not have the problem that I mentioned earlier. Not a fan of the whole 'OK Google...' thing anyway, so I don't seeing typing a few words vs. speaking them to be a downside.
