CEL with no code. Huh

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm new here.

My 05 Legacy GT has right near 240K miles on her now and for the most part runs great. Well, that is till a couple of months ago when a check engine light came on. It turned out to be a fuel air mixture sensor that my brother-in-law and I chased down and replaced. She ran fine for a couple of months till: (see below)

A few weeks ago I got another check engine light but she still ran fine so I thought maybe I could make it the 1/2 hour drive home... Whoa, not so fast, she began running very poorly so I parked it at a friends house in town. I went back down to the car with a borrowed code checker and the test showed no codes. I borrowed another code checker and still no codes. Then my brother in law (who works at Subaru) brought home a fancy higher tech code reader that he managed to borrow from one of the mechanics at his work. Still says no codes.

This process went on for a week, ending with my starting the engine and holding elevated RPMs for about 10 seconds to see if maybe a bubble in the fuel line might push through, but then the CEL began flashing on and off so I panicked and shut it off. I had pretty much given up at this point and began getting ready to head home, defeated. Then, for some reason I decided to try to start it up just one more time before leaving. The damned car started fine, ran great and the CEL was not illuminated any more...

I've driven it a few times with no problems since then but not anywhere critical i.e. work etc as I just don't trust it. The car runs fine but I don't feel confident that it won't do the CEL thing again and leave me stranded somewhere I don't need to be. I'd really like to get that warm fuzzy feeling again with this car but it has me baffled and worried about using it.

Has anybody had an experience like this or maybe have an idea what may have caused this crazy issue? I'd sure appreciate any help or advice I can get on this quandary.

Thanks, T

Do you still have the factory up pipe on the car?

When was the last time the plugs were replaced? Are any harness clips broken on the coils?

What kind of pressure AND volume is your fuel pump putting out? Did you get gas from a different station recently?

Could also be a cam or crank sensor going bad. If they aren't in sync, it will run rough or stall out. Perhaps your brother in law can scope the cam and crank sensors to see if one ever shows a little hiccup.

Flashing CEL means no hard codes and is almost always a cylinder misfire caused during acceleration. It can be characterized as "multiple cylinder misfire" as usually it's not just one cylinder.

Check coil plugs first and make sure you have them snapped in place. You may want to remove coils and lightly twist electrical connection pins with needle nosed pliers to make sure they have good contact. The coil plugs become loose over time and this helps tighten them.
