Do the 2.5i N/A engines need routine valve adjustments?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, my 2010 Legacy 2.5i Premium is N/A and only has 16800 miles on it, yet I notice the distinct sound of too much valve lash.

Is it normal for the 2.5i N/A motors to need routine valve lash adjustments?

I figured I would ask here before I scoured the FSM for the procedure.

Subarus engines are generally a bit noisier than most inline engines because of the mechanical valve train instead of hydraulic lifters. I wouldn't say it is routine but I am sure it would eventually need to be done. I just haven't heard of anyone doing it as regular maintenance.

Same here. I adjusted valve lash on my Baja while I had the engine on a stand at about 173k miles, and I suspect that was the first time it has ever been done. I adjusted most of them, but I don't recall any of the valves being way outside the target range. It's not unreasonable to think that you'd need to make some adjustments (throw some valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals in there at the same time, they tend to harden up and leak a little), but between the mechanical valvetrain and the injectors, these engines are a bit talkative.
