Clutch Noise - Need Help Diagnosing

Recommended Posts

2010 Subuaru Legacy 2.5i Premium. 136k miles. I bought the car with 68k on it back in July 2013, so I'm not sure if the clutch needs to be replaced but I'm prepared for it.

A few days ago, I started to hear some noise coming from my clutch when it's pressed in and when the car is moving. It doesn't happen when the car is stopped.

The noise sounds fluid based. I want to compare it to the power steering whine which occurs when you turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right, but it's missing the whine. Maybe similar to a human trying to make the sound of ocean waves with their mouth, but on a constant level.

Any ideas?

Find a sloped spot you can safely let the car roll with the engine off and see if the noise still there, with your windows down see if you can hear it better or worse.

If its not there with the engine off, is it their with the engine on but coasting with the clutch in?

Only noisy under power? If this I would suspect a diff or driveshaft bearing maybe center diff.

I tried what you suggested this morning. With the engine off and coasting down an incline, I can't hear it with the engine off with the windows up or down.

It's only making the noise when the car is on and in motion. If I'm stopped and I put the clutch in, there's no noise.

I had the center diff replaced two years ago. I'm really hoping that is not it.

If you're not sure if the clutch has not been replaced and you have 136k miles, I say you might be due for a new clutch and TOB. The whining sound is most likely the TOB getting ready to grenade itself. I've had 2 of them grenade themselves, it all starts with a little whine and within a week it gets louder. If you start hearing it get louder, stop driving and get it replaced.
My wife's balls are delicious.
