monamonster
So I JUST got my son a 2005 GT 2.5 Turbo five speed and the 2nd day of driving it's crapping out... Started w/no power (hesitation) when shifting and guzzling gas like mad...no CEL at first so put in fuel injector cleaner... CEL came on after about 2 hours... codes (p0301, 0302, 0303 & 0304) say all cylinders are misfiring but everyone says that's not possible/likely? pretty much loss of all acceleration when the turbo would spool up cant get past 50MPH in 5th....turbo spooled up and made a whining/howling noise... Thought maybe the O2 sensors but don't really feel like tossing $275 in if that's not the problem...replaced the crankshaft position censor but that didn't help... my son seems to think (he's not well versed in engines) there's some kinda "leak" somewhere... ??? Any thoughts, suggestions, experience with the same!?
KRM
There's a lot of similar experience discussed in the board on what you have going on. First I'd do a boost leak test, and inspect both oil control valves. Any ideas if the turbo has been replaced, or other major maintenance before you got the car? monamonster
Thanks, KRM! I tried to skim through to see if there was anything similar but didn't quickly see anything maybe cuz 1 - I'm new to this shit and 2 - at work... The boost leak test... how/who/where can that be done? ... *sorry...was married to a mechanic for 20yrs but not so familiar with Subaru's/performance engines... I don't believe the turbo has been replaced (that's whats scaring the shit out of me...don't want to have to dump 2k into it when I just paid $4500 ) or any other major maintenance The kid only had it for a year...so very little (front end parts, radiator, boost gauge, wastegate (?) and boost solenoid) My son said the other guy put a some kinda mod in it and that's what might be coming back to bite ??? *APPRECIATE! gkinslow
This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Some pics of the engine bay may be helpful since it sounds like you are unsure how much of this car is still OEM and what has been modified. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/checking-general-health-your-engine-and-tune-210369.html Above will give you instructions for boost leak testing. That's not a bad place to start. Also adding your city/state to your profile might be beneficial as members could then point you to a trusted Subaru mechanic in your area. That would be my first step. Have it inspected by someone that knows exactly what they are looking for.
Max Capacity
http://people.csail.mit.edu/ilh/vacation/ the service manual may come in handy. Yep, need to know the history before you bought the car ? JmP6889928
If you had a howling noise-not a good thing. Is your CEL blinking rapidly? If so, it's most likely a "multiple cylinder misfire" which could be part of the problem. I would look at the intercooler to throttle body hose to make sure it's not popped partially off, and also look for potential vacuum leaks. As I mentioned in the first sentence, howling noise is not good. Could potentially be the turbo, but check the other things first and drive it GINGERLY until you find out. Gex
Kid was working the shit out of it and it popped a hose. I would bet the throttle body hose.
monamonster
@ gkinslow - UGH *my fear It's at his GF's house (her uncle is a mechanic and dad and neighbor "enthusiasts")...those are about the closest to "someone who knows what they're looking for" we can get (without spending $$$) My cousins a race car mechanic but not close by and works on GM engines... I'll add my demographics - thanks!
monamonster
@ gearhead...I'm not an enthusiast so didn't know what to look for, I trusted his dad (journeyman master mechanic) would know if it was "sound" or not... I did pull the car fax ... I'm in Gurnee, the car's in Fox Lake RN and probably won't be looked at until the weekend since people have "jobs" lol... It's got 117k miles...son said the transfluid was low (prior to CEL) coming on
monamonster
@ jmp - yeah, I wouldn't think so... not sure about the CEL, I'll ask but yes, the codes pulled from the CEL said ALL FOUR CYLINDERS were misfiring... and yeah, my son thinks there is some kinda "leak"... monamonster
@ GEX you mean my kid was working the shit out of it (as in the trans/turbo?) ... I'm giving them all the input, though they're on a few forums as well.. Thank you all for your imput - APPRECIATE!! *I'm used to big blocks with 12-bolt posse's LOL! #MUSCLECARGIRL
Gex
As in the kid was driving the car hard, spending lots of time in boost. Add in a 13-14 year old set of vacuum lines and I would bet dollars to donuts he popped a hose. Check the blue t fitting under the front of the intercooler behind/under the intake manifold as well as the throttle body connection on the driver side of the intercooler. Max Capacity
You can do a boost leak test by, using a pint size paint can to plug the big hose off the air filter box. Pull the small hose off the blow off valve on the tmic. Give that hose a short blast of air from a compressor, put your thumb over the hose and listen for leaks. We zip tie all vacuum hoses as a general rule. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. monamonster
So I took it to a shop thanks to a "Friend" of mine...he said it needs a MAF Sensor... he had left his shop so couldn't give me a price but said it HAD to be ordered from Subaru cuz they don't make an OEM... i'm finding that hard to believe.... ???? I see a few on Ebay which is where I've gotten quite a few parts... anyone have a "trusted" place you buy from? Also, is this a PITA to change...is it worth having the shop change it? monamonster
sorry... MAF "sensor"
JmP6889928
If it actually needs a MAF (not doubting but have not seen many, if any of these actually fail), you'll want to order an OE from Subaru. BUT, with that being said, a couple of things: 1. VERY easy to change-2 screws and a harness plug. Right on top of the airbox, you'll see a small square device with 2 screws and a wiring harness plugged into it. That's the MAF. Unplug the harness by pushing the lock button down and releasing the plug. Remove the 2 screws gently and make sure not to drop them. Gently twist and pull it out of the housing. 2. Now that you have it removed, clean it first with CRC MAF cleaner (gray spray can) available at AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance, and most other auto parts stores. Spray the little bulb liberally and let it air dry and re-install by reversing the instructions above. That may be all it needs. Keep us posted. Max Capacity
There some of us that clean the MAF sensor yearly. Spray some cleaner up that tube also. The small bulb is the IAT, inlet air temp. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
