5eat dipstick reading and oil viscosity

Recommended Posts

Hey all, got 2 unrelated questions:

1. My tranny dipstick is reading a tick below low when cold. How much tranny fluid do I need to get it to read full?

2. It's an 05 GT with 110k miles on it,should I be using a heavier oil or stick with the 5w30?.(I only use Amsoil so the brand is not in question)

TIA,Zack K.

1) Reading the oil level when the trans is cold is a shot in the dark. The "standard" procedure(outlined in the manual) is to check fluid when it's level surface, warmed up, engine on, and trans in park. Don;t get it to read full, as an overfilled trans is worse off than an underfilled one. I usually shoot for 1-3mm below the full-hot mark. Also, use ONLY Subaru or Idemtisu ATF-HP. I know some have used Amsoil as well, but these trans's are fairly picky from what I've heard.

2) Amsoil 5w30 is more than plenty. :) If you plan on playing racecar a lot(autocross, tack time) maybe consider 5w40.

My tranny dipstick has a cold full and low mark, and a hot full and low mark. Since I had this option,J figured I can top it off without burning myself. I usually check tranny fluid when hot .

I only use Amsoil for engine oil, not the tranny. Subaru or Idemitsu are the only ones I put in the tranny.
