Lytesp33d
95 legacy l 2.2 litre Manual Trans awd. I recently replaced the clutch in this because it was shattered. Found out the flywheel bolts were different because one was rounded off. I found out the books that were on it matched what went on a forester. Don't know what exactly is in it because my brother was the person who worked on it before and did who knows what to it. I know the flywheel bolts were torqued way too tight and most other. Did it to spec putting it back together. Anyways, since I got it drivable again is made a slight gear grinding noise as you let out the clutch but stops the noise when fully engaged. Shifting seems fine through all gears. It's my mom's car and she drives it all the time. Not real often and not that many miles at a time. It's been almost a year and now the noise has gotten worse. I don't notice any loss of power or slipping. If I have the e brake on and go through all gears as I let off the clutch it will make that grinding noise. Might be willing to try rebuilding it myself but it would be my first transmission ever. I just don't know what I would be looking for if obvious gears weren't ground down or if it might be a transfer case issue. I'm not experienced at all in this area but fairly handy and can keep my cars running with enough you tube videos and Internet searching. Hopeople someone has some info to share that might help my journey through this. Was thinking of taking it into aamco and getting their opinion too. Have no idea what they would charge to rebuild it. Don't have a lot of money to invest in it and it's pretty beat up but runs good still. After posting this i found someone that mentioned it could be the throwout bearing. When i did the clutch I replaced the bearing but it only had one retaining clip. Didn't find the other one if it ever was there before but still held in place. Didn't think it would be an issue. RumbleRumble
there are two retaining clips for the TOB. Looks like your going back in for a 2$ part.
doublechaz
Probably that. While you're in there for a few more dollars do the pilot bearing as well if you didn't before.
Lytesp33d
I was kind of wondering if that was going to be the case. Anything else you can think of that might cause that sound without the car moving? It does seem to be dependant on engine speed.
