Looking to buy 18 Legacy

Recommended Posts

Getting rid of Cherokee XJ, looking to get new Legacy. Dealer near me has a Premium trim for 26.9....my trade in won't be worth much, looking to get loan through my bank(Navy Fed) and looking to put down $3,000-4,000. I know this thread is full of knowledge, but any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated! Any room to negotiate price? Smart to go through my bank if I'm getting good interest rate? Down payment amount? Appreciate any info and hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday!

Sincerely,

Future Subaru owner

Don't know enough about your deal my friend for anyone to give you solid advice. Ask to see the factory invoice. It is your trade that is the real variable. The more they give you on the trade, the higher the price will be on the Legacy. The better the price on the Legacy, the worse the trade in value...it's a game you have to play. There is ALWAYS room to negotiate on price! As far as financing, no one can help you there...based one credit scores and term length so you are on your own here. Put down what you can afford and over extend yourself where you struggle to make your monthly payment. Best "fatherly" advice I can give you;)

The trade-in isn't the real variable. I don't expect to get much for it. I was planning on buying a new car around this time, instead of taking the car in for inspection and getting it registered (recently moved to new state) I figured I'd pull the trigger. From what I understand the best thing to do is negotiate price first, and leave trade-in talk and financing for after the price is set. I have to go the CU and talk loans but from what I gather, I can get a solid low interest loan that won't break the bank for monthly payments. This will be my first time purchasing a car, so I'm trying to gather as much info as possible. Thanks for the info pops!

I've always gone to CarMax first. It helps you get an idea of what it might be worth to someone else.

For example, when I helped my mom buy here Forester we went to CMax first and they offered 3k for her vehicle.

Went into the Subaru dealer negotiated the vehicle and then said if they beat carmax they had a deal. Of course they asked what CM offered and I said lets wait to see the best you're willing to offer on the trade, they offered 4k.

Craigs list is your best option. Your old Jeep is the "perfect" type of car to sell yourself as the "type" of buyers on CL are usually not looking at very expensive cars. I have sold 4 vehicles without incident on CL. Just don't take a check, cashiers check, money order, or fall for some other payment scam and you will be fine. Cash is king!

There ya go... I like to get 3 dealers bidding over e-mail... :)

It's great to get them bidding over an e-mail but you get your best deal when you are sitting face to face with money/financing in hand and ready to drive off the lot today! You think you got a good deal over an e-mail??? Wait until you see what you can get when you tell them you are ready to sign on the bottom line right now if you give me "this"!

For anyone doing what meaux stated above, do not think that the deal you got through an e-mail is the best you can do...trust me...it is not and there is still money on the table for your taking:)

I agree with email. I’ve done this for a few times now and it’s had good results if you don’t mind the effort.

Essentially I email everyone that has my exact model within a distance I am willing to drive for the deal (usually 50-75 miles) and they start competing with each other.

At some point the offers become relatively minimal in price changes, like $50 difference. Then, start talking about accessories. One dealer offered to throw in a remote start plus installation and another offered free lifetime power train warranty.

Eventually weigh what you want and go in there and make your deal. Be ready to sign. Last time I bought a car I brought my own financing with me and I was in and out of there in less than an hour. Most of that time was spent haggling a little about my trade in.

Yep, works for me... With the E-Mail haggling (and not answering the phone) you don't waste your own time sitting at 3 dealerships and listening to hours of Bull Shit and Showroom trickery, but if that's what turns you on... Believe me, you're not gonna walk into a Showroom and Rob any Professional Car Salesman... They do this everyday for a living...

In a week or two you have your best deal without leaving the house and not sitting in a showroom where they want you to shake hands with their Boss and their Boss's Boss... What a Pain the Ass that song and dance is...

When my 'Order' comes in, I'll drive to the dealership, write a check for the agreed selling Price and I don't buy any extra 'extended' warranties or accessories... After the Finance Guy sees my eyes glazing over as he runs over his well rehearsed lines, he gives up and I'm outta there in less than an hour...

I bought a 2017 Outback and a 2017 Honda Accord V6 this way and I'll never enter another Showroom again... My 2018 Legacy 3.6R will be here in a couple weeks... :)

To each his own...

Subaru has some 0 interest loans if you qualify. They can vary regionally but Ive seen same promoted near me in the midwest as well.

Legacy 0%x24-36-48mos, 1.90%x60-63-72 months

Subaru financing is through Chase, with no loan setup or early payoff fees on approval of credit.

In addition to my bank, I would also look at my credit union and my State Farm agent. All have had reasonable rates in the past for me.

Thanks for the help everyone! I purchased an '18 Legacy Premium for a great deal and so far lovin it. Now is there anything that should be addressed or changed early on, not looking to do much of anything to it, but if there is any known issues I can address now I will. If there's a thread on it, point me in that direction!

Nice Jersey! I got a similar deal, $380/mth to the bank. You get the Navi package? I got the 2.5, didn't think the 3.6 was necessary for my use. Pearlescent white, no Nav unit, Google maps works wonders through Android auto. Washed it earlier today here in VA, perfect day for it. Already planning on what I want to do/add, nothing major, mostly asthetic. I'll post some pics if I have some time this week.
