Differences between OEM Wagon rear springs?

Recommended Posts

Are there any differences in height or stiffness between the different Legacy Wagon rear springs?

OEM part numbers are:

-20380AG05A - GT

-20380AG04A - i Limited

-20380AG03A - i Sport

I've been looking for a Gen4 Legacy rear spring set that will give a small lift, but I have not been able to find any... so looks like OEM is the best I can hope for.

*Back story*

On the example of a few posts in OB lowering thread I went a bit experimental with my Outback XT and replaced all struts with LGT Koni yellows paired with my stock OB springs.. aaaaaand it's a sh*tshow in the rear with how incredibly overcompressed the outback springs are... it's like riding a pogo stick down the road and super harsh over any potholes. The adjustment on the Koni's does nothing because it's pushed up over the operating range of the strut. And to top it off, the spring on the driver's side is so ridiculously overcompressed that it has started bowing outward and rubbing on the driver's side rear tire - a gash is starting to form on the sidewall.

I wish I could find like a Rallitek overload spring for the Legacy that would give a bit more stiffness/height than stock wagon springs... but OEM is the best I can find at this point... so any help with the differences between these springs would be really helpful... or point me toward a better solution.

I don't know how King is listing the same spring for both the Outback and the Legacy, because I know first hand that the Outback stock spring is far longer than the Legacy stock spring... and if the standard height Kings will raise the OB by 1"... that makes me wary about sticking it in the shorter Legacy strut... Is is possible that there are different KSRS-29's for the Legacy and Outback?

Start here, http://infamousperformance.com/ Mike will be able to answer your questions. After all he's the one who got most of us on Koni's and Epic springs back in the day.

Thanks, I emailed him.

I also found a thread here from 2012 where someone posted a reply email from a King rep regarding their "lowering spring" KSRL-29

"Hello,

The KSRL-29's do raise the GT 5-10mm plus have an increase in spring rate of

15-20%. The KSRS-29's are a further 25mm higher than the KSRL-29's and I

feel would be to high

From what I can gather, the KSRL-29's are lowering springs for the OB, but due to the significantly longer struts in the OB, ends up still raising the Legacy a small amount. Does that make sense or am I making things up?

Unfortunately the thread ends without any update from the OP... so I also emailed King to see if they would confirm this... If true it sounds like a pretty good fit.

That's only for the front though, I haven't found any Rallitek rear springs for the LGT.

Edit: oh, there are the rears... They don't show up in searches...

(Dang, now I'm thinking about doing this instead of spacers in the rear...)

  • 4 weeks later...

Figured I should update this thread. I did end up getting the Rallitek 1" Rear Raised springs (RTEK-830-523-355) and paired with the Legacy Koni's and 1" spacers from ADF, I absolutely love the ride and the handling as a daily driver... firm but smooth - absorbs bumps nicely without jarring, and the Koni's are fantastic with smoothing out big potholes... rebound damping after hitting the bumps is like butter. I haven't pushed it really hard yet because we've had constant snow and ice on the roads since I got them in, but I'm definitely able to drive a fair bit more aggressively in these bad conditions that just about anyone else on the road. I also love the stance... just the slightest bit of forward rake because of the strut spacers in the rear (the front setup is Koni as well, but installed into my stock OB strut tubes with stock OB front springs... results in about 1/4" lowering)

ALSO - I need to make an addendum to the OP - I had said that the OEM Outback rear springs gave me poor results, but it turns out that my mechanic was installing the lower spring seat upside down... so the springs were further overcompressed and THAT's why it sucked... Found this out because after he installed the Rallitek's it actually made things worse.. so I threw up my hands and ordered OEM Legacy wagon springs, but when he tore the rear struts down again to install he finally noticed that those spring perches are supposed to be the other way around :spin:

So once the Koni's were installed correctly, turns out I never had a spring issue to begin with, and I bet the stock OB springs would have been just fine. Either way, I've got the Rallitek's in now and it all worked out in the end.

Final suspension build list:

-Koni Yellows for leggy all-around

-new KYB strut plates

-Stock OB springs front, Rallitek 1" raised leggy springs rear

-1" rear strut spacers by Anderson Design & Fabrication

-Whiteline Front & Rear adjustable swaybar kits (22mm front and 20mm rear) with lateral locking collars and adjustable end links

-Rear Sway Bar Reinforcing Brace made from heavy duty aluminum (custom made by TraildogCK)

-Mevotech complete aluminum front LCA's with upgraded main bushings and ball joints

-Whiteline bushings for the rear UCA including KCA399 rear camber kit

-Megan Racing adjustable rear forward lateral links
