Compression/ leak down test results

Recommended Posts

I need some help/advice. I just had a compression and leak down test performed, and i didn’t get the best results...

Compression test

Cyl 1: 144psi

Cyl 2: 146psi

Cyl 3: 143psi

Cyl 4: 130psi

Leak down test

Cyl 1: 12%

Cyl 2: 8%

Cyl 3: 13%

Cyl 4: 29%

I’m sure I’ll need to rebuild or a new short block soon but how bad is it really? How long do you think I have before my engine is toast? My car runs totally fine right now but it comsimes about a quart of oil every 500-600 miles. I’m not seeing any smoke come out of the oil filler tube but its pushing a good amount of air out. I have 102,000 miles on it and my mod list includes:

Blouch 380xt

GS ebcs

GS top mount

Up pipe

Down pipe

Invidia q300 catback

How long you been on this setup? Sounds like your #4 exhaust valve is getting pretty burnt and your rings are no spring chickens. The sooner you do the engine, the better your turbo will fare. If you want to run it till they both die, that's an option too. If you save up 6 months or a year for a shortblock, odds are your turbo will be fine. Get a shortblock and rebuild the heads, back in biz. Your mod list didn't include fueling, is that stock? If so, might want to consider upgrades during the rebuild to support that turbo.

I’ve been on this set up for almost 25,000 miles now. So I basically have ringland failure, right? That’s good to know, I didn’t know it would affect my turbo that much, my shop told me to run my car till it starts smoking then buy a new block. I was actually just about to upgrade my fueling system but decided to get a comp/leak test done first just for peace of mind. Cant quite say I have peace of mind right now, but I’m sure happy I went with the safer rather then sorry option!

If the block suffers nothing worse than worn ringlands and burnt valves, the turbo will probably be fine. If you end up spinning a bearing, the turbo will likely not be fine. Nothing at this point to indicate you're likely to do that, so don't overstress.
