16" Rim on 2008 Legacy Limited 2.5i

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I just purchased a 2008 legacy limited 2.5i, and I'm in the market for snow tires. I'm trying to find a set of rims with the TPMS sensors as well as snow tires which is proving to be no easy task. The car is currently equipped with 17" rims. The tire size is 205/50/r17.

I found a few options, using a tire calculator tool as a guide, but many I'm finding are on smaller sized rims. I've read in other forums that the smallest sized rim that will fit is a 16" but I believe that was for a Legacy GT. We got a regular legacy, NOT GT. So my question is will a 15 or 16" rim fit over the brakes and other components.

The best deal I found so far was snows, with TPMS on a 16" rim. But the tires are 215/60/R16. So they are about an inch taller than the original rim? Will it fit without rubbing?

16's will not fit on a 4th Gen GT, the brakes are bigger on a GT.

FWIW, the AWD system is so good, I run 225's for snowtires on my Wagon and my Spec B. I don't want to give up the performance in the dry.

In fact a good set of all-season tires is all you really need on a 2.5i.

For the TPMS, just put a piece of black tape over the light on the dash. You'll find its much cheaper to do that when two of your sensors have bad batteries. That's how I fixed the ones in my Spec B.

So what I'm hearing is the rims that came with the car must not be the original cause they are 17" rims. And also I'm ok buying the snow tires with the 16" rims cause they should fit over my legacy brakes cause its not a GT. Sounds like i should buy the tires :). $240 with rims and tpms sensors.

Think I'm also going to invest in a couple scan tools for tpms sensors to reprogram, just spent 8.5k on car, ill be damned if the dash lights are on . So looks like i need an ATEQ quickset tool and I'm also going to purchase a sensor id reader tool that also does diagnostic and reprogramming for vehicles other than subaru. Subaru is only brand without ECU learn mode for tpms  . Looks like about 260 for both tools, but will save me money down the road instead of seeing Mr. Subaru twice a year for $100 bucks.
