Enlight
I need help diagnosing a knocking sound my car makes upon engaging first gear. I've read the various threads on shudder/stutter but this does not sound like it. Relevant details is that the second owner (I'm fourth) performed a 6MT swap on it, and it has a Clutchmasters FX300 clutch. This problem did not exist when I first received the car. As you can see in the video, there's a significant amount of shaking that's transmitted through to the shifter. This can be felt throughout the car as well. This happens primarily when I'm in the process of engaging the clutch, before it has fully engaged. Once fully engaged it does not happen. However, I have been able to recreate this sound when accelerating hard at first and promptly getting off the gas. The car will lurch as a result of the engine braking, and this will replicate the sound. Is this a clutch issue? Transmission mount? Engine Mount? I live in NYC and slip the clutch often as a result. I also learned how to drive manual on this thing, so there was a lot of slippage in the first month that I owned her. Thanks for the help. relative4
I would start by checking out the pitch stopper, tranny mounts, & engine mounts.
JazzAvi8r
i'm honestly not trying to be a dick here, but looking at your RPMs, it seems to me like it's a driver error. before I watched the video, I was thinking throwout bearing and maybe a worn transmission sleeve. but after watching the video, the only way i would be able to give a better solution is to drive it myself. DaveWaters
Check the clearance between the fuel lines bracket and the fuse box. When the motor shakes the bracket can contact the fuse box and make quite a knock. And check your trans mount as relative4 stated..could be torn allowing a lot of play when you slip the clutch. Enlight
Thanks guys, I will check the tranny, engine mounts and the fuel line bracket/fuse box. I know it's not the pitch stopper as I just checked it recently. JazzAvi8r, no offense taken. What kind of driver error combined with the revs do you think would replicate this sound? In the video there are examples of the sound being reproduced with high as well as low revs. muFreight.co A JDM Container Sharing Service from Japan to NYC Website | Instagram | Email Bessie II's Thread
Enlight
Got under the car today but couldn't determine anything conclusive. The transmission mount looks fine (it was also recently replaced by AZP a year ago), and the motor mounts look okay too, but I believe I will need to remove them completely to really examine them. I used a pry bar between the subframe and engine to see how much movement there was, but I don't really have a point of reference to know what is the acceptable range. The driver side did seem to move more easily than the passenger. muFreight.co A JDM Container Sharing Service from Japan to NYC Website | Instagram | Email Bessie II's Thread

JazzAvi8r
^^ drive shaft center support bearing sounds pretty good. Enlight, after watching the video again, I do see the rattle at both high and low RPM. I apologize. does the car bog down at all after you get off the gas pedal? Enlight
No apologies necessary. I can replicate the banging sound briefly by getting off the gas abruptly. Is this the center drive shaft support assembly I should be inspecting? I found it in TeriyakiBBS's thread. It doesn't look like Subaru sells that component - I have to get the whole propeller shaft assembly. What I'll do is inspect it to see whether it's just the bushings that need to be replaced. If so there is an aftermarket one offered by Driveshaft Shop. It looks like these things are also called carrier bearings. muFreight.co A JDM Container Sharing Service from Japan to NYC Website | Instagram | Email Bessie II's Thread
Enlight
Took a quick gander and it looks like the center bearing is fine. muFreight.co A JDM Container Sharing Service from Japan to NYC Website | Instagram | Email Bessie II's Thread
Enlight
Any other suggestions, besides engine and transmission mounts, before I crack open the transmission? CV axles were recently replaced. muFreight.co A JDM Container Sharing Service from Japan to NYC Website | Instagram | Email Bessie II's Thread
08SpecB_DE
Sounds internal but it might be a good idea to take it to a reputable shop in your area and have them put it on a lift. They should be able to quickly pinpoint the location.
apexi
I'd don't have much experience in this area, but I'd be curious to see if there is any play in center bearing.

They should be able to quickly pinpoint the location. Yeah, I just sent AZP an e-mail to see if they can diagnose it through the video. If not, I'll drove over and have them do it in person. I'd don't have much experience in this area, but I'd be curious to see if there is any play in center bearing. I got under the car (see above) and gave it an inspection. It doesn't seem to be the issue. muFreight.co A JDM Container Sharing Service from Japan to NYC Website | Instagram | Email Bessie II's Thread
apexi
Yeah I saw that you did a visual inspection but I wasn't sure if you grabbed it and checked for play.
Enlight
Yeah =T I rocked it up and down and left and right. The movement seemed normal to me and no metal on metal sounds. It could be the case that the movement that seems normal to me is not in fact normal. I based my assessment on other pictures of bushings I've seen that were completely torn. Mine looks practically new. muFreight.co A JDM Container Sharing Service from Japan to NYC Website | Instagram | Email Bessie II's Thread

It was pretty obvious. The shafts move pretty easy when I grabbed them. Did you end up replacing the shaft? Perusing the parts catalog it looks like the bearing itself is not serviceable. With a 6mt swap the Spec B drive shafts are pretty hard to come by in the salvage yards. Just dug up this thread you made an appearance in and it seems HAMMER DOWN likes the driveshaft shop. muFreight.co A JDM Container Sharing Service from Japan to NYC Website | Instagram | Email Bessie II's Thread
