diesel4982
Hey everyone, I was just at the subaru deadlier this mooring and saw the 2018 outbacks had two usb ports in the rear. Does the Legacy have the connection already in there for this? Anyone that works for subaru, can you possibly find out if this can be retrofitted into the Legacy using the outback parts and connections? I searched for the subaru part number for the Interior console box but the diagram doesn't detail which parts exactly we would need.
NewSubieLegacy
I just got the 2018 Legacy 3.6R (I think "limited" is now assumed for 3.6R) and it has dual USB ports for the back seat between the heated seat switches and under the vents. Can you control CarPlay from it or does it only charge?
inthedeck
^^ Looks just like the '18 OB. Now, to find a retrofit for the 17's!
pshadden
Can you control CarPlay from it or does it only charge? It only charges from the back. Have to use one of the front ones for CarPlay.
diesel4982
Awesome! Does anyone know what parts would need to be changed to make this fit on a 16 Legacy. I don't know if the previous years actually have the connection to make this work. Can anyone help?
YeuEmMaiMai
you can do a nice aftermarket setup like this https://smile.amazon.com/Ginsco-Cigarette-Lighter-Splitter-Motorcycle/dp/B01B79F8CW/ref=pd_sim_469_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=1MQXZE9GAZ28H9AT71PM
diesel4982
I was going to go aftermarket until I saw the outback, and now legacy, at the dealership. If I can go oem, I'd rather do that.
pshadden
The interiors aren't much different between the 16s and 18s, I'd think the center console would fit if you could find a new one to swap into yours. Probably only have to run the wires through the center to the fuse box. Or wait a couple of months for someone to total theirs in the winter and get a pull from that and then try to swap it out? diesel4982
I'm pretty sure the parts will fit also, I just wanted to know the part number to be able to order it, and if the connection is already there for the usb ports to connect to. Mark N
It's about time! I had to fish (and conceal) a USB hub back there for my rear-seat passengers. My '13 Ram truck has 2 those rear ports, and I couldn't believe my '16 Legacy didn't when I bought it.
diesel4982
So I just purchased the 2018 legacy usb ports and wiring to install on my legacy, took apart the center console...Where does that wiring plug into? I have a harness for rear heated seats and now a harness for the usb but can't find what it plugs in to...can anyone help? I thought the plug would be there tucked away somewhere. Pilot1226
You might need to check the service manual in the wiring diagrams for that. Or at least the accessory installation guide from STIS.

Not to be an ass, but why would you think there would be somewhere to plug it into if the car wasn't designed to have those outlets? I could understand if it was part of a higher priced option package. But this wasn't an option an that vehicle.
YeuEmMaiMai
^ because they will typically make one main harness and then add the options by plugging them in..
Painless
diesel4982... Can you provide the Part numbers and possibly pictures of them. I would like to accomplish as well. The Subaru parts website drawings can be very difficult to decipher. I have parsed-out info from the 2016 Legacy Manual that may help showing where (I believe) the connector/s should be for the power port. You should be able to confirm the wire colors going to the connector. Hope this helps.Legacy Rear Port Info.pdf
diesel4982
I'll get you all the part numbers and take pictures in the morning. I'm waiting on one last part which is the rear console face that has the cutout for the rear usb.

I could understand if it was part of a higher priced option package. But this wasn't an option an that vehicle. What I've experienced is they'll make one main harness because it's cheaper for them, then trickle out the features each year...they're definitely not redesigning harnesses every year to accommodate this stuff. So..I figured it would be there. What's funny is they even use the molded plastic for a 13 pin connector, when it's only two wires for the usb ports. diesel4982
These are the parts I bought, I'm missing one part which is the face of the rear console. When I get it, I'll post it. I already had heated seats , but I had to get new buttons because they changed the shape of the button. Luckily, if you have heated seats already, the wiring for the buttons are the same, it uses the existing wiring. The circled plug on the left (driver's side) is the existing harness for the heated seats, the circled plug on the right is the cigarette lighter plug, that's the wire I'm tapping in to to power the usb in the rear. The order of pictures: 1st pic, heated seat buttons as they changed the shape of the buttons to allow this feature 2nd pic, usb unit 3rd pic, wire harness for usb unit

Yes, I do have vents in the back, you don't have to do anything with those as they'll fit in the new rear cover piece. I posted pics of the parts needed earlier in the thread. Do you have vents in the rear and/or rear heated seats?

diesel4982
With the rear vents, there is a plastic tube piece that runs underneath the center arm rest, I don't know that part number. There's also another plastic tube piece that is below the shifter, but I'm not sure where that piece connects to behind the radio. They connect together bringing the air from the front to the rear. I don't know if they make a rear console cover with rear ac vents and usb, and not with heated seats. I never had to check that out.
