I have a miss fire on cylinders 1 and 2

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 legacy GT. I bought it with a bad motor and have rebuilt the hole motor. Ever since I have had the engine back in and running it has had miss fire codes for cylinders 1 and 2. I took it to the dealership and they said it is misfiring on all 4 even though it is only showing codes for 1 and 2. They recommended me rebuilding the engine but I just had that done and know that it is good. I have double checked the timing and have replaced the timing tensioner, I have replaced the plugs, I have checked the coils and they are good. The is good also. I have ordered the vvt solenoids to try replacing those and see if that works.

The car idles fine and runs fine until you floor it and add boost, when I do that, it looses all power and starts pinging. I fee like the VVT could be whats causing it because of it seeming like a timing issue. But I don't know if something with the turbo could be causing it also? Any help would be awesome! Thank you!

I have tested all the plug wires and they are all working fine. I don't know what exactly caused the issue. I bought it with the bad engine, I'm sure the previous owner was not taking care of it cause the car only has 135k on it. There was a loud knock and when I pulled the engine out and pulled the heads, there was signs of piston slap.

So many missing pieces here.

Was the turbo checked while the engine was apart ?

who rebuilt the heads ?

have you done a boost leak test ?

who rebuilt the engine ?

are all the vacuum hoses connected correctly ?

compression test ?

How old is that gas ?

"rebuilt the hole motor" Make that "whole" motor.

The Turbo was checked while off the engine, I rebuilt the heads with my brother who is a master technician, I haven't done a boost leak test, The vacuum hoses are on correctly, The gas is new, I have done a leak down test and a compression test and both were good. The small block was built by Jensens auto in Ogden, UT. I have triple checked the timing belt. I took it to the Young Subaru Dealership in Ogden, UT, they also checked timing, compression, leak down, and spark. They said all of those test came back good. The only thing they said that I hadn't known before had is that it is missing on all 4 cylinders, not just the two that I am getting codes for. So I'm thinking it has to be a bad sensor or something like that. I have ordered the vvt solenoids to replace. But I don't know what other sensors to try next?

Have the injectors ever been cleaned ?

Before you throw to much $$$ at it, one of those shops should be able to tell you what's wrong.

I would fine a repair shop that specializes in Subaru's. Seems most towns around me have one. Stop paying Dealer rates.

I agree with Max. It sounds like you need to have it looked at by someone who not only has the tools to see exactly what's going on, but also the willingness to dive deeper into it. The fact that it idles seemingly fine and breaks up under load would incline me to check fueling and spark first. Clogged injectors, a clogged/bad pump, faulty regulator etc. Perhaps try swapping injectors one and two with injectors 3 and 4 to see if the misfire follows them. Same with the coils. Other things to think of:

How is the MAF? Has it been checked/replaced/cleaned?

How is the oxygen sensor?

Are we sure the car is on a stock tune?

Are all the chassis grounds still in tact and conductive?

Yeah, they were all out, and yeah they were all put back into their original places. I just replaced both vvt solenoids and it didn't change anything. Also, I did have the injectors cleaned when I had the engine out. I have no idea if it has a tune on it or not... it wouldn't surprise me if it does, because their are indications that it has been raced in the past. How would I check to know if their is a tune on it??? also is there a way to re-tune it back to stock?

The MAF is good and has been cleaned. I'm thinking you guys are right. I think I need to find a good Shop and have them look into it. I don't know if anyone on here is from southern Idaho or northern Utah, and would know of a good shop?

Unfortunately without a vag-com/tactrix cable, or an AccessPort there is really no way to tell if the car has a tune on it. I can bet a Subaru-centric performance shop would be able to tell you pretty quickly though. I'm not sure about recommended shops in that region as I'm just a paltry midwesterner. :)
