P0500 help

Recommended Posts

I’m working on a 2007 Legacy 2.5i. It has had a P0500 code for a while now, but I jest recently replaced all 4 whee bearings and now the ABS light is on and ER SS on the cluster. P0500 is for the vehicle speed sensor but is that referring to the transmission speed sensor or the wheel speed sensor for the ABS?

This can be caused by incompatible wheel bearings. Was a bearing replaced about the time the code showed up?

Do you have a scanner that can pull ABS codes? If not, you can pull them with FreeSSM and a $10 eBay VAG-COM cable.

Do your cruise control and ABS work OK?

Yes all four wheel bearings just replaced. I actually followed the steps to read all codes on the cluster, no scanner needed, I came up with C0107, C0105, and C0140. ABS light is on as well as CEL. I don’t know if cruise works or not but the light flashes.

I replaced the rear wheel bearings 2 years ago with cheap eBay bearings and they worked excellent. In fact they still seemed to be in fine shape but very loud, so we decided to replace all 4 bearings, using the same brand as last time. I don’t believed I harmed the sensors in anyway but this all started as soon as the job was done. Also I used anti seize on the new bearings of that makes a difference?

The codes I pulled up are for Front RH sensor, rear RH sensor, and CAN communication error. Any help would be great.

It's hard not to like the idea of hubs for under $30, but I believe they are indeed the source of your problems.

First, at the risk of getting into a semantic argument, it appears that your definition of "without an issue" includes driving around with a P0500 code (and whatever ABS code(s) triggered the P0500) as you've been doing apparently since the first time you put in one of these cheap hubs. This is a dangerous situation, as the wheel speed sensors are essential to ABS operation.

Here's what I would do, take it or leave it:

1. Pull the sensors on the affected knuckles and check for damage.

2. Stick your compressor's air gun into the sensor hole and blow it out while rotating the wheel, on the chance that the sensor readings are being thrown off by ferrous debris stuck to the magnetic sensor ring. Stuff can get in while you're replacing a hub or axle. I had this happen once.

3. Buy a Timken or other reputable hub and install it on one of the wheels that is throwing a code.

4. If the new hub eliminates the code from that wheel, replace hubs as needed to eliminate all codes.

No, by without an issue, I mean there was no issue the first time I used the hubs. There were no codes, no ABS light, etc.

The old ones lasted almost 3 years absolutely problem free, the only reason we decided to change them is that they were getting very loud. There was no play in the wheels no ABS issues, nothing. I too agree that it could be the hubs. Perhaps I got a couple of bad ones? I only have the codes on one side of the car, so I assume I can just swap them around and see if the codes move, I will try the air compressor thing.

So I finally got around to doing this. I swapped the two front hubs and cleaned everything I could with compressed air.

The codes did not change a bit. I had the battery unhooked the entire time I was doing this. The hubs are not the issue, I'm leaning towards the ABS sensors being the issue but I didn't do anything to damage them and they worked fine before the hubs were replaced?

your answer is here

C0105 ABS wheel speed sensor malfunction (ABS wheel speed sensor abnormal signal) Abnormal signal of rear ABS wheel speed sensor RH

C0107 Abnormal signal of front ABS wheel speed sensor RH

you can test the voltage of the sensor as indicated on the service manual . but usually if you never changed it there are old ans used so just change it .

C0105 is gone, only C0107 and C0140 remain.

Battery voltage, ground issues? If the ground strap between engine and chassis isn't there then you may get some strange faults.
