MrShaw
Hello, new member here. I don't claim to know much about exhaust systems so bear with me... I am getting to the point in my ownership where I want to start doing mods to my wagon, firstly, the exhaust. So I have two choices here in New Zealand, I can either get a pair of STI Genome mufflers(etc.) for my car, which sounds fantastic by the way, unfortunately, this costs $550 NZD. Which is I guess three-hundred and something USD, it's also not brand new and comes off of an import, but is in good condition. Second option: I took my car down to a muffler shop today and asked them about it, I am taking it in tomorrow and they are gonna put it up and take a look at it to see if deleting the middle muffler/resonator is a good option. Again, unfortunately here in New Zealand, removing both rear mufflers is illegal due to sound caps on exhausts, I don't want it that loud anyway. According to YouTube, resonator deletes sound great on my car, but droan like a mofo. Did anyone get anything done like said above? I thought I would ask the experts. Sorry if I got some technical stuff wrong, the main point is, the resonator delete may be a lot cheaper, but might not sound as good. Thanks for the long read! MilesA
The main job of the resonator is to cancel out that annoying droning noise, so not surprising what happens when it's removed. You get more noise, but not the kind of noise you want. Not really any benefit IMO. Maybe you can leave the main part of system intact, just change the mufflers themselves. Sounds like you've reached that conclusion already, just a bit more expensive than you'd like.

Preferably ones that just bolt on to the flanges, if you know what I mean. I have a feeling $550 isn't all that bad for a branded exhaust like that, maybe there are cheaper models out there. MilesA
Borla is the only one I've heard that I like very much, tbh, because it only gets loud when you get on it. I grew a bit tired of loud exhausts some time ago.
MrShaw
Borla is the only one I've heard that I like very much, tbh, because it only gets loud when you get on it. I grew a bit tired of loud exhausts some time ago. Okay, so I took the mufflers off of my car to see how it would sound. It was loud, unsurprisingly, but I think that with a small muffler it would be just right. Does the diameter of the pipe make a difference to the sound? Because if I went from where the exhaust detatches, to a smaller straight, or bent pipe, do you think it would be quieter?
MilesA
I think the stock pipe is 2.25", could be wrong on that. I would not want to go smaller, just to keep the exhaust free-flowing. The muffler would be the main thing as far as noise goes, I believe. Speaking of loud, here is an interesting EZ30 exhaust sound: Not sure about the legality of that where you live! Something else you may want to think about. The exhaust system on these tends to rust out around that Y-section where the pipe splits. If you are doing exhaust work back there anyway, you might want to make sure that section is in good shape.
magnusonsubie
I'd say grab the STi genome mufflers. They should bolt on and I think you'll like the look and the sound of them. They should be pretty tame. Having a shop cut out the resonator is a bad idea. I currently have a Borla catback on my wagon and I actually am going to get the resonator changed out in hopes that one slightly longer gets rid of the last little bit of drone and I've also scraped a hole in my current resonator. 2005 Vader Wagon Material Tests on Ringland Failure Piston I should have held off and purchased a wagon instead of the spec.B
derp
I just posted a muffler recommendation in another thread but I'll repeat it here: Vibrant Performance. http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1527_1032_1109 Cost is reasonable, though I'm not sure what shipping to NZ would be. I could suck start a snow blower.
3.0r413
I've tried the small muffler route on my 3.0r. It's a bad idea. My exhaust is stock with 5 inch mufflers and the drone is unbearable. Drone free 3.0rs are difficult to come by these days since hardly anyone is still producing a muffler designed to be quiet enough for the 6 cylinder. derp
Vibrant also makes these: http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1527_1032_1055&osCsid=9b37e4ae8d2352b0a294d022ab82db04 I could suck start a snow blower.
