Engine swap EJ20 to Ej25d?

Recommended Posts

Hi, i have an legacy 95 GL running an EJ20 manual. Bought a Legacy 98 GX running EJ25D automatic yesterday.

But the body is weak on the new one, so im wondering if the engine is swapable or not. And if possible would it be difficult you think?

Cause what im seeing is that my 2L runs 116 hp but the new one runs 150+ hp somewhere, cause the 116 hp is too weak in my opinion. But i also read that people swap their ej25s to an ej20, any explanation on that?

If you have two complete cars, swapping stuff is easy, well easy in the sense that you have all the parts you already need.

Well yeah i do, but would it be better to swap the whole engine and transmission or just take some parts from the EJ25 and use it in the EJ20? Would that even work, maybe only the block? but i could see a problem in that the aut/man difference?

(a little noob here)

If it were me and you weren't planning on slapping a turbo on the ej20 or doing any sort of build I'd just swap the ej25 to a manual.

I did the head gaskets on mine while I had the engine out because the head gaskets do tend to go with age but I think (not positive) people use ej20 engines or ej22 for the potential of low compression turbo builds paired with reliability. The ej25 is high compression so not much you can do to build more power. That's just my thoughts tho

Anyways the engines are super easy to pull, 1 and a half maybe for someone that's done it, 3 hours for a noob. Transmissions are sort of the same but likely will need a couple of helping hands for both

If you have money just sitting around for this engine id pull the ej25, do the head gaskets, maybe get a new clutch kit while your down there, and put it in the 95

That simple actually, clutch on the 95 was changed in 2016 and the head gaskets in 2013. So no problems as of gear ratio, ECU or something in the electrical instruments?

so...you're not in the USA as there never a Legacy GL or GX in the USA nor an EJ20 version...and you're not Down Under where they called 'em a Liberty.

Is your EJ20:

- fuel injected - 4 fuel injectors? - some countries still used carbs or MPFI instead.

- OBDII? In the USA '95-'96 was a transition year to OBDII - which means the electronics/ECU were not compatible....but the engines are still 'swappable' if you know which parts to move over.

- SOHC or DOHC? The EJ25D is DOHC and its intake manifold will not fit a SOHC....in case you needed to keep the sensors from the EJ20 to match.

In the USA the EJ22 and EJ25 engines had different final drive ratios, and would require swapping the REAR differential to match the trans. Although the Automatic EJ22 was the same as the 5-speed EJ25D (4.11) from '95-'99.

Okay so now I'm sort of confused lol so you have a 95 with a manual and an ej20 and theoretically you would just want to put the ej25 in there for the power gains. I guess this becomes educational to me too. If the transmission and diff are staying in the 95 and just not touched wouldn't you be able to just transplant the ej25 in place of the ej20 without messing with any of the diffs or tranny? Or would you need to change the ecu over also?

Well the old one has SOHC and new DOHC. EJ20E is the full code. (Norway, EU model)

I was thinking of only an engine swap but i might have to do everything then, literally stripping down the new one and place everything in the old. Interiour too.

Green is the new one :p2cb1f86de96a1cb3418a2592e3635db8.jpg5c2aded8100d907270c452f4654263cf.jpg

I will put it like this.

You don't want the full EJ25D your car. You really don't. Bottom end issues and head gasket issues await you if that engine has not gone through them yet.

I WILL tell you this. You want the EJ25D heads and intake manifold on your EJ20E block. Why? If the EJ25D is 1997-1998, then the chambers match the EJ20 bores perfectly for raised compression.

The 25D heads also breathe in more air than the EJ20E heads. More air = more power = easier to move around. You will also like the rev-happiness the engine will have, because the 25D is NOT a rev happy engine.

The 25D has already been through the head failure and such, but only head and manifold would work[emoji848]

Basically, you want the following to combine as one engine.

EJ20E bottom end.

EJ20D head gaskets.

EJ25D heads and intake manifold.

EJ25D head bolts.

EJ20D/EJ25D timing belt assembly.

EJ25D dipstick with dipstick tube.

EJ25D oil pan & oil pump.

You can work with your stock wiring harness, knock sensor, and ECU for this. Your makeshift EJ20D would be a turnkey start and a hell of a lot of fun.

Only one problem, i dont have a EJ20D engine [emoji14]
