klxdrt
Hi, http://legacygt.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif My wife & I are new 2018 Legacy Premier 2.5 owners (500 mi) and we noticed (valves) chattering at cold start up. After a normal start, no chatter. Dealer said chattering would stop during break in. Is this normal for Legacy's like ours? Also just noticed a missing image from center of dash. See image below. I know there a lot of 'touch points' in the dash, do you guys think I touched the wrong one? I uploaded a jpg from the manual outlining the features of 'Shields Up' (eye sight) for quick referance if you want it. Regards,
MrCobbs
As far as the missing lines are concerned this is most likely because the eyesight did not pick up the lines on the sides of the road. With lane keep assist turned on once it picks up a line, either left or right, the lines will begin to appear again. You can even have one appear at a time if eyesight only picks up on the left or right line. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ammcinnis
My wife & I ... noticed (valves) chattering at cold start up. Probably timing chain rattle. Not unusual, benign, and it may or may not go away with time and mileage. Also just noticed a missing image from center of dash.Try re-enabling cruise control. capttris
The 2.5 engine is noisy when cold. This is the case upon a cold startup, whether it's 70F or 30F. Normal. Mine generally get quiet within the 1-2 minutes. Nothing to worry about.

BradLegacy2017
All 2.5l / 4 cyl boxer engined Subarus I have learned are quite noisy on cold start up. I would say it's completely normal. Even our new 2017 Legacy is this way.
YeuEmMaiMai
I have not noticed excessive noise on start up unless the car has been sitting for a few days...
Pilot1226
Does the 3.6 also have valve chatter at start, or is this unique to the FB & EJ?
Ronin3.6R
Mine is started in the garage every morning which would emphasize any noise- I hear nothing but a smooth start. No chatter, metal or other unexpected noise. Only noise I hear is after shut down as the car "pings" as it cools but I hear this is normal. balbrec2
My 2015 2.5 has a little valve clatter for a few seconds after cold start regardless of ambient temp. My theory is that this is due to the position of the oil filter and the need to fill before full pressure is achieved. The ADBV in the blue filter is rather ineffective imho. There are better filters out there but until the engine warranty is over, I will stick with Subaru oem filter. I will also be going to a 0W-30 oil after the warranty expires. just my $.02. balbrec2
klxdrt
balbrec2, Would you please tell us what are some of the better filters by name? I thought the oil filter was in a strange place & it's position inverted?? I'm gobsmacked that with all the hi-tech features of today's cars, etc that no one thought to integrate a 'pre-matic oiler' into the engine & transmission design. Our Legacy is running fine. We have been able drive most our cars upwards of 200k miles with the exception of our 2 GTOs in the 60's especially the '66 with ram induction, tri power, 4 spd close ratio, 4.11 rear, oversize steel belted radials. That car wore out quickly & hardly lost a drag race. I wonder why?http://legacygt.com/forums/images/smilies/lol.gif Below is a pix of the 2012 Sonata we traded in on the Legacy.http://legacygt.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

That being said, I really don't know how much of an issue this engine noise is ,regarding longevity.
kmills1
My 3.6 is quiet at startup, my 2.5...not so much. Kinda had me freaked initially until I started reading how common it is.

hkshooter
Does the 3.6 also have valve chatter at start, or is this unique to the FB & EJ? No, the 3.6 is smooth and quiet. The 2.5, as said previously, is noisy as hell on start up, sounds like piston slap to me. Gets quiet after a couple of minutes. As well as noisy, the 2.5 is a bigger dog than usual during this period of time. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

I said it "sounds" like piston slap, not that it is. As sad as it is, the sound is normal for this engine, piston slap or not. Probably unique to the beast and obviously nothing to worry about since they get 200k out of the things.
