klxdrt
Hi, Subaru missed some simple items: How do I replace "mouse horn" with one with "gravitas"? & How do I stop radio from turning itself on when starting car? Just bought a 2018, 2.5 Legacy Premium Magnetite Gray Metallic. Love the car, handling, 4 wh drive, CVT, and all those good/great things that make a Subaru a car that sets itself apart from all the other drones out there. However Subaru seems to have missed 2 simple items. 1) The "mouse horn" needs to be replaced with a horn with some "gravitas" and 2) Why does the radio need to turn itself on when starting the car? With over 60 yrs of driving/owning cars from a 1936 Packard 8 limo to a new Legacy; I turned the radio on when I want to listen to it. It seems "intrusive" with today's sophisticated tech we need to be insulted with such an arcane process. How can I disable the radio playing on start-up & is there any stepped pix or info on the forum showing "replacing the horn process"? Did some searching to no avail. Regards, klxdrt
laz
If you have the navigation they have to show you the disclosure. That is why it turns itself on. They don’t make the rules, they just follow them. Tons of horn replacement threads. ---
MilesA
There's a lot of threads and walkthroughs. Here's some for just sixth generation: https://www.google.com/search?q=horn+nautilus+OR+super-tone+OR+sharp-tone+OR+freeway-blaster+%22sixth+generation%22+site:legacygt.com And here's some for any generation: https://www.google.com/search?q=horn+nautilus+OR+super-tone+OR+sharp-tone+OR+freeway-blaster+site:legacygt.com Some of these were impacted by the Photobucket disaster. Da Roo
Some of these were impacted by the Photobucket disaster. FYI if you use chrome you can fix the broken photobucket links with an add-in. klxdrt
Thanks for the quick reply. I'll just have to live with the "mouse horn" as I have a condition that severely limits my proprioception. Even so, you guys have have been helpful to a new subie owner with your quick, thoughtful responses. Regards, klxdrt
BradLegacy2017
ahhhhh mouse horn FTL!!! It is so whimpy sounding! I've actually been too ashamed of it to use it! I wish you didn't have to take the bumper off to swap it out for some hella supertones!
MilesA
Supertones are totally overdone in the Subaru community. Dual FIAMM Highway Blasters high-note/low-note are the ticket. Your car will sound like a 1960's Buick. Other drivers will take notice and do a double take.

klxdrt
Hi, "Removing Front Bumper is one if the easiest things to remove" for most people; however I have idiopathic peripheral neuropathy which robs me of the sense of the relative position of my own parts of the body ("feet & legs" proprioception) and strength of effort being employed in movement. Short story: It's impossible for me to get down to a kneeling position, then get up and move to a new position. I can't maintain enough balance to do any physical work because I am always in a position to fall, then I cant get up. If the horn was removable from the top of the radiator like the dozens of horns I replaced in cars from a 1935 Packard Limo to my new 2018 Subaru, it would not be a problem. I have the know-how, experience & all the tools I cold ever need as indicated in the pix below. You guys have any suggestions? No friends, family or neighbors as I just moved to a new state. Paradox
Keep the stock horns installed, but pull their fuses (two stock horns, each horn is on its own fuse). Use a tap-a-fuse and run a new power line to whatever horns you want to use. Find suitable locations in the engine compartment to mount your new horns (screws, zip ties, etc) and run the new wiring to them (there's space behind the bumper and clear of the radiator in case of heat/melting). The horn fuses are in the engine compartment fuse box. Use a relay in your setup and whenever you hit your horn on the steering wheel, it'll trigger your new horn setup. If you pull the fuse for the stock horns, it won't trigger them or sound them, but only your new setup. You can perform all your work while standing over your engine. It might not look pretty, but it's practical and effective.

klxdrt
Brisvegas; Beer is no problem here, we are from the coal mines of Pennsylvania & every day at 3 pm the "Harry E" mine whistle blew & 3-4,000 very thirsty deep coal miners rushed to the nearest beer garden to slake their thirst in the hundred's of them in the area. My parents used to make their own beer, so I learned early. Paradox
If you go the route of some of those air horns, they pull a bit of current for them (also take a moment or two to spin up and sound). You'll need a 15-20 amp blade fuse for them, as well as about a 12-14 gauge wire run for them for the power feed (you can go 16, but it might not sound as loud/deep as it would on a thicker gauge). MilesA
Below is the horn I'm thinking of... My old air horns started off nice and loud, but as they got dirty and/or corroded internally, they sounded like a goose being strangled! Then there is the spin-up delay for the compressor. When you need the horn right now, you don't want to wait even a few fractions of a second. Did I mention they could get iced up in Wintertime driving? That's why I'd suggest using regular auto horns in a tuned pair. The stock horns draw around 3.5 amps each, so 7 amps total. Horns like the Supertones or Freeway Blasters draw maybe 7 amps each, so 14 amps total. A relay is a good idea.
klxdrt
Paradox & MilesA Thanks for the tips. Got this suggestion from the Forum: FIAMM Highway Blasters hi-note/low-note. Sounds like a 60's Buick Looking at other horns. Hella Sharptone Thought I would upload the install guide for the Bad Boy Horn to give you guys a better look of the install, etc. I'm going to call the mfg tomorrow about the wiring load, etc.
